The group consists of Colby College in Waterville, Bates College in Lewiston, and Bowdoin College in Brunswick. In allusion to the Big Three of the Ivy League, Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin are collectively known the "Maine Big Three", a play on words with the words "Maine" and "main". The school names are ordered by their geographical organization in Maine.

The University of Southern Maine (USM) is a public university with campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston, Maine, United States. It is the southernmost of the University of Maine System. It was founded as two separate state universities, Gorham Normal School and Portland University. The two universities, later known as Gorham State College and the University of Maine at Portland, were combined in 1970 to help streamline the public university system in Maine and eventually expanded by adding the Lewiston campus in 1988.

Unity Environmental University is a private university based in New Gloucester, Maine. It offers undergraduate and graduate education based on sustainability science that emphasizes study of the environment and natural resources. Initially founded as a residential school in Unity, Maine, the university expanded into online education in 2016 which grew both its enrollment and number of academic programs. The university moved its online program to the historic Pineland Farms campus in New Gloucester in 2019 and later relocated their administrative headquarters there. Unity Environmental University operates both online and in-person programs. It also operates a farm and indoor growing facility in Thorndike and an outdoor center in Moose River.

Glenn A. Cummings was a Democratic member of the Maine House of Representatives, representing the state's 115th district. He served from 2000 to 2008, including one term as the Speaker of the House, and was termed out of office in 2008. In 2000, when he first ran for the District 115 seat, Cummings became the first candidate in Maine history to qualify for public financing under Maine's new "Clean Elections" law. In 2009, Cummings was appointed deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Vocational & Adult Education. Cummings worked for the Goodwill Hinckley School in Fairfield, Maine as president and executive director.

The Stonecoast MFA Program in Creative Writing is a graduate program in creative writing based at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, Maine, United States. Stonecoast is one of the oldest low-residency creative writing programs in the United States and is notable for being one of only two such programs in the country to offer a degree in popular fiction. The Stonecoast MFA program is a low-residency program. Ten-day residencies for students, faculty, and visiting writers are held each January and June. The rest of a student's academic work during the two-year program is pursued on a one-on-one basis under the leadership of a faculty mentor.

Gerald Edgerton Talbot is an American civil rights leader, author, and politician from Portland, Maine. Talbot was the first Black legislator to serve in the state of Maine, the founding president of the Portland, Maine, chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and was president of the Maine State Board of Education under Governor Joseph Brennan. In 2020, the Riverton elementary school in Portland was renamed the Gerald Edgerton Talbot Community School.

Theodora June Kalikow is an American academic, university president, author, and women's rights advocate. Holder of a master's degree and PhD in philosophy, she taught at Southeastern Massachusetts University for 17 years before becoming Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado in 1984. From 1984 to 1987 she was Dean of Plymouth State College in New Hampshire. She then served as 13th President of the University of Maine at Farmington from 1994 to 2012, and Interim President of the University of Southern Maine from 2012 to 2014. She was inducted into the Maine Women's Hall of Fame in 2002.
