This article lists some of the students' unions in the United Kingdom that are not affiliated with the National Union of Students. Around five per cent of student unions in the UK are not affiliated with the NUS, [1] including

Durham Students' Union voted to disaffiliate in March 2010 [4] but subsequently voted to reaffiliate in January 2011. [5] Oxford University Student Union was reported as having voted to disaffiliate in 2014, [6] but this was overturned after voting irregularities were uncovered. [7] Four unions voted to leave the national body in 2016 Lincoln, Newcastle, Hull and Loughborough (Lincoln later rejoined but has since again disaffiliated). [8] [9] In 2022, Reading University Student Union voted to leave the national body [10] citing a lack of representation and concerns over the direction of the NUS. [11] As of December 2022 Brighton Students' Union also decided to leave NUS stating that the NUS do not offer value for money. [12]

The University of Lincoln is a public research university in Lincoln, England, with origins dating back to 1861. It gained university status in 1992 and its present name in 2001. The main campus is in the heart of the city of Lincoln alongside the Brayford Pool. There are satellite campuses across Lincolnshire in Riseholme and Holbeach and graduation ceremonies take place in Lincoln Cathedral.

The National Union of Students (NUS) is the peak representative body for Australian higher education students. As of 2020, there are 21 student unions in Australian campuses affiliated to NUS. A student union is eligible for membership by its classification as a legitimate student representative body at any Australian post-secondary training provider and the payment of Union fees by the union according to the number of full-time study units of its students.

Imperial College Union is the students' union of Imperial College London. It is host to varied societies and has student bars situated around Albertopolis. The Union is based in the north wing of the Beit Quadrangle on Prince Consort Road. Based on the latest reports from the Charity Commission, the Union as a registered charity had an income of £5.55m and an expenditure of £8.49m; leaving Imperial College Union with a negative deficit of £3m as of 2022.

The Coalition of Higher Education Students in Scotland (CHESS) was a body representative of students in Scotland, founded in 2001 by the Students' Associations of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and St Andrews Universities, and Glasgow University's students' representative council.

The Organised Independents are a grouping within the National Union of Students of the United Kingdom.

The University of Wollongong Undergraduate Students' Association is the principal student union at the University of Wollongong (UOW), New South Wales. Besides representing the campus students' interests, WUSA provides them with specific welfare services.

Scottish Young Greens (SYG) is the independent youth wing of the Scottish Greens.

Dundee University Students' Association (DUSA) is the students' association, legal representative and students' union for matriculated students of the University of Dundee. It is known locally as 'The Union'.

The University of Southampton Students' Union, branded and commonly known as SUSU a contraction of Southampton University Students' Union, is the students' union at the University of Southampton in southern England, United Kingdom. SUSU operates a number of facilities for students at the university, represents the students to the university and at the university council as well as providing support services and social activities. The union is financed through its operations, a grant from the university and additional benefits brought by its charitable status.

No Platform, in the UK, is a form of student boycott where a person or organisation is denied a platform to speak. The British National Union of Students (NUS) established its No Platform policy in April 1974. Like other No Platform policies, it asserts that no proscribed person or organisation should be given a platform to speak, nor should a union officer share a platform with them. The policy traditionally applies to entities that the NUS considers racist or fascist, most notably the British National Party, although the NUS and its liberation campaigns have policies refusing platforms to other people or organisations. The policy does not extend to students' unions who are part of NUS, although similar policies have also been adopted by its constituent unions.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Malia Bouattia</span> Former president of the National Union of Students

Malia Mazia Bouattia is the former president of the National Union of Students (NUS) of the United Kingdom, elected at the National Conference in April 2016. She was the first female Black British and Muslim leader of the NUS. She attended the University of Birmingham. In March 2017, she was defeated in her attempt to run for a second term in office by NUS Vice-president Shakira Martin.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Newcastle University Students' Union</span>

Newcastle University Students' Union (NUSU) is the students' union of Newcastle University in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It is an organisation with the intention of representing and providing services and welfare for the students of University of Newcastle upon Tyne. It was originally set up as the Union Society and changed to its present name in 2011. In 2022, it voted to rejoin the National Union of Students (NUS).
