Lithuanian Swimming Championships

The Lithuanian Swimming Championships is the national swimming championships for Lithuania. They are organised by LTU Aquatics and separate championships are held annually in both long course (50m) and short course (25m) pools. [1] The two meets are the country's top domestic meet for their respective course.

Contents

The first edition of the championships was held in Raudondvaris on 5 July 1931, with events at the Nevėžis River. [2]

Sportin Lithuania is governed by the Physical Education and Sports Department following the country's independence from the Soviet Union in 1990. The championships are staged in a 25m pool, referred to as short course format, and traditionally have been held biennially in alternate years to the World Aquatics Championships. Unlike the World Aquatics Championships, only swimming events are staged at these championships.

The 11th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) was held in Istanbul, Turkey on 12–16 December 2012. This swimming-only championships took place in the Sinan Erdem Dome; all events were swum in a 25-meter (short-course) pool.

Rūta Meilutytė is a Lithuanian swimmer. An Olympic gold medalist, she is a world record holder in the short course 50 metre breaststroke, 100 metre breaststroke and long course 50 metre breaststroke. She is a former world record holder in the long course 100 metre breaststroke.

Danas Rapšys is a Lithuanian swimmer. He is a two-time Olympian, a multiple-time Lithuanian record holder in the men's backstroke, freestyle and butterfly, and a double swimming champion at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei, Taiwan. Rapšys is also a member of Panevežys Žemyna Club, and is coached and trained by Ina Paipelienė.

Simonas Bilis is a Lithuanian swimmer. He is the current national record holder in the 50-meter, 100-meter freestyle and 50-meter, 100-meter freestyle.

Giedrius Andriunaitis is a Lithuanian swimmer who specialized in sprint freestyle events. He is a multiple Lithuanian champion, who represented his country at 2009 European Junior Swimming Championships, in Prague. Andriunaitis also participated at LEN European Championships in 2010, and 2011 Summer Universiade, and other international competitions over the world. Andriunaitis was a member of the swimming team for SMU Mustangs at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Andriunaitis was a significant contributor to the mustangs in winning Conference USA titles.

Kaylee Rochelle McKeown is an Australian swimmer and triple Olympic gold medalist. She is the world record holder in the long course 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre backstroke and both the long course and short course 200 metre backstroke. She won gold in both the 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke, as well as the 4×100 metre medley relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics staged in Tokyo in 2021. In 2023, she was named as the "Best Female Swimmer of the Year" by World Aquatics, after sweeping gold in all three events of backstroke at all three World Cup legs, held in Berlin, Athens and Budapest in October, 2023.

The 15th FINA World Swimming Championships were held from 16 to 21 December 2021 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was previously scheduled for 13 to 18 December but moved back three days on 24 February 2021. Originally scheduled to be held in 2020, the championships were pushed back one year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Competition took place in a 25-metre temporary pool installed at Etihad Arena.

The 16th FINA World Swimming Championships took place from 13 to 18 December 2022 in Melbourne, Australia at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Swimming events in the championships were conducted in a 25-metre outdoor pool.

Mečislovas Birmanas was a Lithuanian chess player who won the Lithuanian Chess Championship in 1943.

Rasa Bandzienė is a Lithuanian chess player. She is three times winner of the Lithuanian Women's Chess Championship.

Marina Mališauskienė is a Lithuanian chess player. She is two times winner of the Lithuanian Women's Chess Championship.

Laima Domarkaitė is a Lithuanian chess player who holds the title of Woman FIDE Master. She is three times winner of Lithuanian Women's Chess Championship.

Živilė Šarakauskienė is a Lithuanian chess player who holds the title of Woman International Master. She is four time winner of Lithuanian Women's Chess Championship. In 2012 she moved to England and now represents this country in international competitions.
