Liz Figueroa (born February 9, 1951) [1] is an American politician who served as a member of the California State Legislature from 1994 to 2006. She is known for being the first Latina from Northern California to be elected to the legislature. [2]
Figueroa was born and raised in San Francisco. She attended the College of San Mateo and University of California, Berkeley. [2]
From 1994 to 1998, Figueroa served in the California State Assembly, representing the 20th District. In 1998, she was elected to the California State Senate, replacing Bill Lockyer. She served as a member of the California State Senate, representing the 10th district. [3]
As a legislator, Figueroa worked on consumer and health-related issues. She authored legislation requiring insurance companies to cover replacement of children's car seats after collisions, and funding legislation for the San Francisco Bay Trail. [2]
In 2002, Figueroa introduced California Shine the Light law, a bill addressing business practices when disclosing customer's personal information to third parties, a practice known as "list brokerage." [4] In April 2004, Figueroa garnered national attention when she proposed a bill (S.B. 1822) [5] aimed at limiting Google's Gmail service from providing ads to users based in part on the content of their emails. [6] After a few months negotiating with privacy groups and Google, Figueroa abandoned the effort.
Figueroa ran for lieutenant governor of California in 2006. In the June 6, 2006, primary election, against fellow state senator Jackie Speier and Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi. Figueroa received 18% of the vote. Speier received 39%, while Garamendi won the primary with 42%.
After leaving office, Figueroa was appointed by California Senate President Don Perata in 2007 to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board.
She is now working for Planned Parenthood Mar Monte as vice president of public affairs.

A California domestic partnership is a legal relationship, analogous to marriage, created in 1999 to extend the rights and benefits of marriage to same-sex couples. It was extended to all opposite-sex couples as of January 1, 2016 and by January 1, 2020 to include new votes that updated SB-30 with more benefits and rights to California couples choosing domestic partnership before their wedding. California Governor Newsom signed into law on July 30, 2019.

California's "Shine the Light" law is a privacy law passed by the California State Legislature in 2003. It became an active part of the California Civil Code on January 1, 2005. It is considered one of the first attempts by a state legislature in the United States to address the practice of sharing customers' personal information for marketing purposes, also known as "list brokerage." The law outlines procedures requiring companies to disclose upon the request of a California resident what personal information has been shared with third parties, as well as the parties with which the information has been shared. The law also outlines specific language that companies who do business with California residents must include in their online privacy policies.
The Fourth Amendment Protection Acts, are a collection of state legislation aimed at withdrawing state support for bulk data (metadata) collection and ban the use of warrant-less data in state courts. They are proposed nullification laws that, if enacted as law, would prohibit the state governments from co-operating with the National Security Agency, whose mass surveillance efforts are seen as unconstitutional by the proposals' proponents. Specific examples include the Kansas Fourth Amendment Preservation and Protection Act and the Arizona Fourth Amendment Protection Act. The original proposals were made in 2013 and 2014 by legislators in the American states of Utah, Washington, Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and California. Some of the bills would require a warrant before information could be released, whereas others would forbid state universities from doing NSA research or hosting NSA recruiters, or prevent the provision of services such as water to NSA facilities.
Patricia "Pat" Carmody Bates is an American Republican politician who served in the California State Senate, representing the 36th Senate district, which encompasses parts of Orange and San Diego counties. She left office on December 5, 2022. She served as the Senate's minority leader from 2017 to 2019. She previously served as a member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors from 2007 to 2014, and the California State Assembly from 1998 to 2004.
