Lobster Cave is a cave on Liuqiu Island, off Pingtung County, Taiwan.

Name

"Lobster Cave" is a calque of the cave's Chinese name. It supposedly derives from lobsters who lived there over a century ago that were driven out by the island's residents during a night raid. [1]

Geology

The cave is limestone and coral, surrounded by coral reefs, potholes, and gullies. [2] It is accessible at low tide. [1]

The history of the island of Taiwan dates back tens of thousands of years to the earliest known evidence of human habitation. The sudden appearance of a culture based on agriculture around 3000 BC is believed to reflect the arrival of the ancestors of today's Taiwanese indigenous peoples. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it was referred to as Liukiu in English; and, Lieou-kieou in French. Palancar Reef is a large coral reef on the southwest side of the island of Cozumel and is part of the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park. The site, popular with scuba divers, is divided into several sections based on depth and coral formations. Dive depths range from 50 to 110 feet, with coral swim-throughs in many places.

The Lamey or Liuqiu Island Massacre was the slaughter of aboriginal inhabitants of Liuqiu Island off the coast of Taiwan by Dutch soldiers in 1636. The killings were part of a punitive campaign in retaliation for the massacre of shipwrecked Dutch sailors in two separate incidents in 1622 and 1631 by natives of the island.

Beer in Taiwan was dominated by monopoly products until 2002, when free trade became law in Taiwan. The main domestic brand remains Taiwan Beer, brewed by the publicly owned Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation that succeeded the government's monopoly bureau in 2002. Taiwan Beer is primarily sold domestically, though the brewery does make some beer for export to Taiwanese living abroad. In recent years Taiwan Beer has stepped up export to China. Zhongzhou Reef also known as Ban Than Reef and Centre Cay is a small coral reef on the north edge of the Tizard Bank in the Spratly Islands, South China Sea. It lies 4.6 km (2.9 mi) east of ROC-occupied Taiping Island, 7.2 km (4.5 mi) west of Vietnamese-occupied Sand Cay, and has an exposed area of approximately 0.2 hectares during high tide, and 0.6 hectares during low tide. It consists of an accumulation of seashells, sand, coral reefs and debris which forms a circular coral reef plate, surrounding the reef under the water, with a diameter of approximately 1.3 km (0.8 mi).
