Logan Brothers was a firm of boat and yacht design and builders. Although their Auckland yard lasted only from 1890 to 1910, it was the most significant yacht- and boat-building business in the Southern Hemisphere during its time, dominating the New Zealand market and exporting vessels to Australia, South Africa and to the Pacific Islands.

Establishment

In approximately 1890 Archibald Logan and his brother Robert Logan (Junior), the sons of local boat builder Robert Logan (Senior), set up in a boat-building business as R. & A. Logan on land reclaimed for the freezing works on the city side of Waitemata Harbour. In 1892 they were joined by their brother John, and the firm became known as Logan Brothers. While Robert looked after the office, John and Archibald were the shipwrights, with 5 apprentices working under them. [1]

Their business became very successful, and from 1898 they began exporting yachts to Australia, South Africa and the Pacific region. Their keel yachts were especially sought after but they built a large number of centreboard craft, pleasure launches and commercial craft as well.

The business was known for their use of frameless diagonally planked two and three-skinned boats made of kauri Agathis australis. The resulting hulls were extraordinarily long-lived, being highly resistant to rot and damage.

Closing of the Business

In 1910 Logan Brothers closed their business after accepting compensation (believed to be in the order of £8000) [2] from the Auckland Harbour Board for the surrender of the remaining 8 years of their lease on the Auckland waterfront to allow the construction of King's Wharf and the King's Wharf Power Station. The brothers went separate ways. Robert and John entered the house building industry. Archibald Logan continued to build boats, but at a slower pace and increasingly began concentrating on the design side.

Notable vessels

Gloriana

Launched on 14 November 1892, Gloriana was built on spec by the three brothers in their spare time to be campaigned themselves. Gloriana dominated everything on the Waitemata Harbour and brought the new firm a lot of business. The 10.36-metre gaff cutter was a scaled down version of the Nat Herreschoff designed Gloriana and incorporated all the latest thinking of the brothers. [4]

Thelma

Thelma was the Logan Brothers’ first really large yacht, was built for marine merchants William and Alfred Jagger. Designed by Arch Logan, then only 32, she was launched from the Logans’ yard on 30 October 1897. [5] Thelma immediately became the scratch boat on the Waitemata, eclipsing the two former heavyweights Viking and the Sydney cutter/yawl Volunteer.

Rainbow

Rainbow is a 36-rater cruiser/racer launched on 7 November 1898 for Auckland dentist A.T. Pittar for racing in Australia where she won the 1900 Inter-Colonial Regatta, to become the first New Zealand Yacht to win an international regatta. Restored in 2007 she is now part of Auckland's Classic yacht Fleet and is currently owned by Brad Butterworth, Hamish Ross, Chris Bouzaid and David Glen.[ citation needed ]

Ariki

Launched on 20 October 1904, this keel cutter was built for Charles Horton and dominated Auckland yacht racing for the next 35 years. She is now owned by Andrew Barnes and Charlotte Lockhart who completed a full restoration from 2016 to 2018 [6]

Iorangi

Launched on 15 September 1901, this keel sloop was built for A. H. Turnbull of Wellington. [7]

Rawhiti

Launched on 4 October 1905 this keel cutter with a LOA of 54 ft (16.45m) was built for A.T. Pittar of Sydney as a replacement for his yacht Rainbow. [8]

Rawene

Launched on 24 December 1908 this keel cutter with an LOA of 42 ft 6in (12.95m) was built for Alfred Gifford. This was the last large yacht built by the Logan Brothers. [9]

Zeddie is an old New Zealand sailing dinghy. The first boat was designed and built by Mr R.B. Brown at Northcote in the 1920s. The Zeddie originally was gunter rigged, which shortened the spars for convenience. Some have been converted to Bermudan, no jib and a spinnaker which was sheeted around the front of the mast leading to many capsizes. This rule was changed in the interests of safety. The Zeddie is 12 foot 6 inches long and about 5 foot in the beam.

<i>Rona</i> (1892)

Rona was a sailing yacht designed by George Lennox Watson. She was constructed in 1892 in Auckland, New Zealand, by master craftsman and designer Robert Logan Snr. for Wellington merchant and book collector Alexander Turnbull, and is the oldest continuously registered ship in New Zealand. The boat was sailed from Auckland to Wellington, leaving Auckland 14 February 1893 and Arrived Wellington Harbour on the 21 February 1893, An article in the Wellington Evening Post on the 22 February 1893 recounted it maiden voyage. The boat is one of the finest surviving examples of a six-beam cutter, she is a gaff-rigged racing cutter, and she is one of the oldest yachts still sailing in New Zealand.

Lawrence Karl Davidson was a New Zealand sailing yacht designer. He is most notable for his International America's Cup Class sailboats which successfully challenged and defended the America's Cup sailing trophy.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is a New Zealand yacht club, and the club behind New Zealand's America's Cup campaigns, under the guises of New Zealand Challenge and Team New Zealand. It held the America's Cup from 1995 until 2003, becoming in 2000 the first non-American holder to successfully defend the trophy. After Team New Zealand's victory in the 2017 event, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron are the current holders of the America's Cup. Tuaikaepau was a twenty-ton cutter, 51 feet (16 m) length, clipper bow, keeler, designed by Archibald Logan and built by Logan Brothers of Auckland, New Zealand and launched in 1903.

Archibald Arch Logan was a New Zealand sailing yacht designer who was a leading figure in New Zealand yachting from approximately 1895 until his death. The Arch Logan Memorial Trophy named in his honour is the premier trophy of the New Zealand M class centreboard racing dinghy sailing completions.

Akarana

Akarana is a racing yacht which was built in Auckland, New Zealand in 1888 by Robert Logan (Senior) to represent that country in the Australian Centennial Regatta held on Hobson's Bay, Victoria. She was restored as New Zealand's bicentenary gift to Australia and is today currently the oldest vessel in the collection of the Australian National Maritime Museum.

<i>Ariki</i> (yacht)

Ariki is a racing yacht which was built in Auckland, New Zealand in 1904 by Logan Brothers. She had a distinguished career as a racing and cruising yacht. From the time of her launch in Oct 1904 she dominated first class Auckland yacht racing until the appearance of the yacht Ranger in 1938. She has the sail number A3.

Alfa Romeo I is a 27.43-metre (90.0 ft) fixed keel maxi yacht, launched 2002, which placed first in the 2002 Sydney-Hobart race and the 2003 Giraglia Rolex cup regatta.

<i>Yampa</i> (yacht) American yacht

The Yampa was an American ocean-going cruising schooner yacht for pleasure use from 1887 to 1899. The yacht was originally built for Chester W. Chapin, a rail baron and U.S. Congressman from Massachusetts. It completed several ocean cruises with no accidents. It passed through several hands and ultimately was purchased by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany as a birthday present for his wife. He had another larger yacht built based on the design of the Yampa, which was named the Meteor III.
