The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) is a collegiate athletic conference whose full members are historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southeastern and the Mid-Atlantic United States. It participates in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I, and in football, in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
The Big South Conference is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division I. Originally a non-football conference, the Big South began sponsoring football in 2002 as part of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), and began operating the Big South–OVC Football Association in partnership with the Ohio Valley Conference in 2023. It is named for Buddy Bolding, who was the first head coach of the Lancers' baseball team, who served for 35 seasons from 1978 until his retirement after the 2013 season.

They defeated Radford in the first round of the Big South tournament to advance to the quarterfinals where they lost to High Point.
Megan Baltzell is an American, former collegiate All-American softball catcher. She played her college career for the Longwood Lancers from 2012 to 2015 and set various school records. She is the Big South Conference career leader in slugging percentage and walks in only three seasons. She was a member of the 2016 Women's National Baseball Team and currently plays slow pitch with the women's national Team Easton. She is also one of nine NCAA Division I players to hit a career .400 with at least 200 RBIs, 50 home runs and an .800% slugging percentage for her career.

The California Baptist Lancers men's basketball team represents California Baptist University in the Western Athletic Conference. The team made the jump into Division I basketball on July 1, 2018. They are currently led by head coach Rick Croy and play at the CBU Events Center, which opened in 2017 and replaced the Van Dyne Gym. The men's basketball program will be ineligible for play in the NCAA Division I Tournament during their transition period, although they can be eligible for other tournaments such as the College Basketball Invitational.

They finished the season 16–18, 5–11 in Big South play to finish in ninth place. They lost in the first round of the Big South tournament to Hampton. They were invited to the College Basketball Invitational, their first ever Division I postseason tournament, where they defeated Southern Miss in the first round before losing in the quarterfinals to DePaul.

The Lancers, led by fourth-year head coach Griff Aldrich, played their home games at Willett Hall in Farmville, Virginia as members of the Big South Conference. With the reintroduction of divisions for the first time since the 2013–14 season, the Lancers played in the North division. They finished the regular season 26–6, 15–1 in Big South play to win the Big South regular season championship. They defeated North Carolina A&T, USC Upstate, and Winthrop to win the Big South tournament championship. As a result, the Lancers received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, the school's first-ever trip to the tournament, as the No. 14 seed in the South Region, where they lost in the first round to Tennessee.
