The Lytham Trophy is an amateur golf tournament founded in 1965 by the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, where it has always been held. It is a 72-hole scratch stroke play competition, and is classified as a Category A event by the World Amateur Golf Rankings. [1]
In 2004 James Heath set a new tournament record with an 18 under par total of 266, winning by eight strokes over Ross Fisher. His total was five strokes better than the 271 posted by Tom Lehman when he won The Open Championship in 1996, and is believed to be a record four round total over the course. [2]

Amateur Bobby Jones won the first of his three Claret Jugs, two strokes ahead of runner-up Al Watrous. Jones was the first amateur to win the title in 29 years, last by Harold Hilton in 1897. Americans finished in the top four spots and it was the fifth victory by an American in six years.

Peter Thomson won his fourth Claret Jug in five years in a 36-hole Saturday playoff, four strokes ahead of Dave Thomas. It was the first playoff at the Open since 1949 and the seventh consecutive year that Thomson, 28, finished either as champion or runner-up. The 278 scored by Thomas and Thomson was a record low for the Open.

The 1988 Espirito Santo Trophy took place 8–11 September at Drottningholm Golf Club in Stockholm, Sweden. The club was later renamed the Royal Drottningholm Golf Club, named from the palace close to the course, the Drottningholm Palace, home of the Swedish king and queen. The course, laid out on crown property, opened in 1959 in a park and woodland area about 15 kilometres from midtown Stockholm. For this championship, the course was set up as the women's championship course with par 73.
