The triple jump, sometimes referred to as the hop, step and jump or the hop, skip and jump, is a track and field event, similar to long jump. As a group, the two events are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". The competitor runs down the track and performs a hop, a bound and then a jump into the sand pit. The triple jump was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games and has been a modern Olympics event since the Games' inception in 1896.
Tatyana Romanovna Lebedeva is a Russian track and field athlete who competes in both the long jump and triple jump events. She is one of the most successful athletes in the disciplines, having won gold medals at Olympic, world and European levels. She has a long jump best of 7.33 m and held the then indoor world record mark of 15.36 m in the triple jump. In 2017 she was banned for doping.

Russia competes at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics from 15–23 August. A team of over 100 athletes was announced in preparation for the competition, one of the largest squads in the competition. Selected athletes have achieved one of the competition's qualifying standards. Yelena Isinbayeva, Tatyana Lebedeva, Yekaterina Volkova, and Olga Kaniskina are the defending champions in their respective events. The 2008 Olympic champion Valeriy Borchin, and world record holder Gulnara Galkina-Samitova, are also competing. Russia will be represented in all the women's events, and furthermore, only five men's events will not feature a Russian competitor.

Chelsea Hammond is a Jamaican long jumper, who competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She nearly missed out of the podium in the women's long jump, when Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare obtained her best possible mark of 6.91 metres at her third attempt, to claim the bronze medal. In 2017, the second-place finisher, Tatyana Lebedeva had a positive test for turinabol and was disqualified from her silver medal. The medals were redistributed and Blessing Okagbare was advanced to silver, and Chelsea Hammond was advanced to bronze.
The 2000 Russian Indoor Athletics Championships was the 9th edition of the national championship in indoor track and field for Russia. It was held on 4–6 February at the WGAFC Indoor Stadium in Volgograd. A total of 26 events were contested over the three-day competition. It was used for selection of the Russian team for the 2000 European Athletics Indoor Championships.
The 2001 Russian Indoor Athletics Championships was the 10th edition of the national championship in indoor track and field for Russia. It was held on 16–18 February at the Alexander Gomelsky Universal Sports Hall CSKA in Moscow. A total of 28 events were contested over the three-day competition. It was used for selection of the Russian team for the 2001 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
