M. Wayne Neal

M. Wayne Neal is a former mayor of St. Thomas, Ontario.

Born in St. Thomas on April 4, 1939, Wayne graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1961. While at Western, he captained the Mustangs football team, was an all-Canadian athlete, and was drafted by the Canadian Football League. He chose to return to his hometown to begin a career as an educator, first as a teacher, later as a principal and finally as a superintendent of education for Elgin County.

He served as mayor of St. Thomas [1] in 1975–1976. He also served as city councillor from 1973 to 1974 and from 1977 to 1978. In addition to serving the local community politically, he was active with many local charities including Big Brothers and the Elgin Military Museum. He is an active local historian, and authored "Five Boys from Myrtle Street", a biography of five local boys who served in the RCAF and RAF during World War II. [2]

Highbury Avenue is an arterial road located in the Canadian province of Ontario. In addition to serving as a primary north–south thoroughfare in eastern London – through which part of it is a limited-access freeway – the road also provides access to Highway 401 and continues south to St. Thomas. The southern terminus of Highbury Avenue is an intersection with South Edgeware Road, just north of Highway 3 and the eastern end of the St. Thomas Expressway. From there, it travels 45.6 kilometres (28.3 mi) north to Highway 7, east of Elginfield. Outside of London and St. Thomas, the road also passes through the communities of Ballymote and Bryanston. It is designated as Elgin County Road 30 within Central Elgin, and as Middlesex County Road 23 within Middlesex Centre, the two rural municipalities through which the route passes.

Alma College was a girls' private school in St. Thomas, Ontario in Canada. Built in 1878, the school was in operation between 1881 and 1988. The college closed in 1988 in part due to a teacher's strike. Primary school and music classes were still taught on campus until 1994. Following its closure the school building was used as a set for several movie productions; Silent Hill, its image is included in the 2009 film Orphan and the made-for-TV movie, Mr. Headmistress (1997). The building was destroyed by a fire on May 28, 2008.
