The Macdonaldtown Carriage Sheds was a facility for the stabling of passenger carriages used on country railway services in New South Wales, Australia. Built by the New South Wales Government Railways in the inner Sydney suburb of Macdonaldtown, it was located in a triangle between the Main Suburban and Illawarra lines.

Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Located on Australia's east coast, the metropolis surrounds Port Jackson and extends about 70 km (43.5 mi) on its periphery towards the Blue Mountains to the west, Hawkesbury to the north, the Royal National Park to the south and Macarthur to the south-west. By the early 1980s, it was mainly being used to stable withdrawn rolling stock with the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum and Dorrigo Steam Railway & Museum both having stock stored here. [1] It closed in April 1985. [2]

In 2007, six sidings were relaid on the site as part of the CityRail Clearways Project for use as a stabling facility by suburban trains. [3] [4]

Rail Clearways Program

The Rail Clearways Program was a program of public works on Sydney's suburban railway network conceived in 2004 with the aim of easing congestion by reducing the amount of infrastructure shared by multiple services. The disparate projects at pinch points throughout the network were designed to increase capacity and improve reliability. All projects were delivered by the Transport Construction Authority until it was subsumed in November 2011 by Transport for New South Wales. Following the introduction of a new timetable in October 2013 that realised the benefit of many of the projects, the program was completed with the opening of the final upgrade in January 2014.
