History

On September 19, 2019, Megaworld Corporation announced that their plan to build a PHP 1.5 billion two-level mall in its 30-hectare Mactan Newtown development in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. It will have a 1.4-hectare man-made lagoon at the center with floating boardwalks and a bridge that will connect both sides of the mall. [2]

It will also have its own chapel, four cinemas, a food hall, al fresco areas, traveler's lounge and a view deck. The mall will be operated by Megaworld Lifestyle Malls. A three-storey boutique hotel with 48 guestrooms will also be part of the mall complex. The mall is expected to be completed in 2021. [3] [4]

He is best known for the Battle of Mactan that happened at dawn on April 27, 1521, where he and his warriors defeated the Spanish forces led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his native allies Rajah Humabon and Datu Zula. Magellan's death ended his voyage of circumnavigation and delayed the Spanish occupation of the islands by over forty years until the expedition of Miguel López de Legazpi in 1564. Legazpi continued the expeditions of Magellan, leading to the colonization of the Philippines for 333 years.

Mactan Island in the Philippines

Mactan is a densely populated island located a few kilometres east of Cebu Island in the Philippines. The island is part of Cebu Province and it is divided into the city of Lapu-Lapu and the municipality of Cordova. The island is separated from Cebu by the Mactan Channel which is presently crossed by two bridges: the Mactan–Mandaue Bridge and the Marcelo Fernan Bridge, both of which connect Mandaue on the Cebu mainland and Lapu-Lapu on Mactan Island. A third bridge, the Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX), will connect the island, through Cordova, to Cebu City. It is one of two bridges that spans across the Mactan Channel, the other being the Marcelo Fernan Bridge, and connects the islands of Cebu and Mactan.

Cebu Bus Rapid Transit System

The Cebu Bus Rapid Transit System is a planned mass transit system for Cebu City located within the greater Cebu Metropolitan Area. It is expected to become the first operational bus rapid transit project in the Philippines. Only one line has been planned in detail so far, but scheme developers note the potential to develop a larger network comprising the adjacent cities Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue and Talisay. Leadership in both Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue have shown interest in the network. This will be constructed at the end or last quarter of 2017 and the first route could be operational by the end of 2019.

Iloilo Business Park, also known just as Megaworld among the locals, is a 72-hectare (180-acre) mixed-use master-planned community development in Mandurriao, Iloilo City, Philippines by Megaworld Corporation. It is located on the site of Iloilo's former airport, Mandurriao Airport, which the conglomerate acquired for 1.2 Billion Pesos from the Philippine national government. Megaworld is projected to pour in ₱25 Billion for the entire development in a span of years. The Upper East, formerly the Bacolod-Murcia Milling Company Complex, is Megaworld's township and industrial estate development in Bacolod city, situated in the 34-hectare land owned by the Araneta Group. While the Araneta Group planned it to be the "Araneta Center of the South", they inked a joint partnership with Megaworld Corporation to develop the inactive property.

The Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX), also known as the Cebu–Cordova Bridge, Third Cebu–Mactan Bridge, and colloquially known as the Third Bridge locally, is an 8.9 km (5.5 mi) toll bridge expressway under construction in Metro Cebu which will link Cebu City and Cordova, Cebu. Crossing the Mactan Channel, it is the third road link between Cebu and Mactan Islands, and the first between Cebu City and Cordova. Once finished, it will become the longest bridge in the Philippines surpassing the Candaba Viaduct of North Luzon Expressway in Luzon, while also surpassing the Marcelo Fernan Bridge as the longest cable-stayed bridge in the Philippines.

Mactan–Cebu International Airport is the second busiest international airport in the Philippines. It is located in the city of Lapu-Lapu on Mactan, a part of Metro Cebu and serves the Central Visayas region. The airport is managed by the Mactan–Cebu International Airport Authority and serves as a hub for Cebu Pacific, Pan Pacific Airlines, and Royal Air Philippines.

Transportation within Cebu City is mainly land-based with most parts of the city accessible by road. There is no existing mass transit but there is an existing proposal for a Cebu Bus Rapid Transit System and Cebu Light Rail Transit System.

Mactan Shrine

Mactan Shrine, also known as Liberty Shrine, is a memorial park on the island of Mactan in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, Philippines. It hosts two monuments, namely the Magellan Monument, which is dedicated to Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and the Lapu Lapu Monument, a bronze statue which commemorates Lapu Lapu, a native leader who defeated Spanish soldiers led by Magellan in the 1521 Battle of Mactan.
