Mahavelona (commonly called Foulpointe), is a town in the district of Toamasina II, in the region of Atsinanana, on the northern part of the east coast of Madagascar.
It is situated at the coast of the Indian Ocean south of the mouth of the Onibe. The town is located at 60 km [2] north of Toamasina on the RN 5 between Toamasina and Maroantsetra. There is a reef around 150 metres out to sea which prevents waves hitting the beach; the waters by the shoreline are completely calm as a result.
Its economy is based on tourism.
7 km west of Mahavelona (Foulpointe) is situated the Special Reserve Analalava. [3] [4]

Naval Amphibious Base Coronado is a US naval installation located across the bay from San Diego, California. The base, situated on the Silver Strand, between San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean, is a major Navy shore command, supporting over 30 tenant commands, and is the West Coast focal point for special and expeditionary warfare training and operations. Ponta da Fragata is a headland on the east coast of the island of Sal, Cape Verde. It is situated at the southern end of the Serra Negra mountain, 6 km northeast of the town Santa Maria. To the south of the headland stretches the Costa da Fragata, a 4.7 km long sandy beach which is a protected nature reserve, important as nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles. Betampona Reserve is a nature reserve in Toamasina Province of Madagascar. It is located 40 km northwest of Toamasina and was established in 1927. The area of the reserve is 29.2 km2.
Analamazaotra Special Reserve is a wildlife reserve of Madagascar, and is part of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. The reserve is toward the northeast portion of the island, and is nearly centered between the coast. The neighbouring Analamazaotra Forest Station is a local reforestation effort.
Dypsis carlsmithii is a species of flowering plant in the family Arecaceae, endemic to the Madagascarian rainforests. It is a rare palm, with fewer than 15 mature individuals identified from two locations in the northeast: Tampolo on the western coast of Masoala Peninsula, and Mahavelona, north of Toamasina. Its trunk grows to 6 m tall and about 40–50 cm in diameter, with mature leaves about 140 cm long by about 80 cm wide.
