Mahbuba Nasreen (born February 1963) is a Bangladeshi academic. In 2023 she was the Pro Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University. [1]
Nasreen was born in February 1963 in Jhiltuly, Faridpur. She pursued her PhD degree at Massey University in New Zealand under a Commonwealth Scholarship, [2] focusing on the intersection of gender and disaster studies Her thesis was titled Coping with Floods: the Experiences of Rural Women in Bangladesh. [3]
Nasreen began her academic career in 1988 as a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka. She received her PhD degree in 1991 with a Commonwealth Scholarship from New Zealand, developing a grounded theory on women's contributions to disasters. From 2005-2012, she served as a Professor of Sociology before being appointed as the Director of IDMVS. [4]
Nasreen was involved in various academic, administrative, and co-curricular activities at the University of Dhaka. She was a co-founder and director of the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS). [5] [6] She writes on this subject for national newspapers. [6] Nasreen serves as the Chief Moderator of the Dhaka University Debating Society. [7]
Nasreen received the Mary Fran Myers Award, 2016 from the Natural Hazards Centre at the University of Colorado (Boulder), USA for her contributions in the field of Disaster and Gender studies over thirty years. [3] She is also the country lead of Gender and Disaster Network in Bangladesh. She has also chaired the selection committee, 2018 for the same award. [8]
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, commonly known by the acronym BUET, is a public engineering technological research university in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Founded in 1876 as the Dacca Survey School and gained university status in 1962, it is the oldest institution for the study of engineering, architecture, and urban planning in Bangladesh.

Nasreen Pervin Huq was a prominent women's activist and campaigner for women's rights and social justice. She died in an accident at her home in Dhaka, when she was crushed by a vehicle. The vehicle was driven by her chauffeur, who was picking her up to go to work as Director of the UK non-governmental organisation Action Aid. Though her death was ruled accidental, some think the driver was paid off by a foreign figure.

Hossain Zillur Rahman is an academic, economist and policy maker from Bangladesh. Khaleda Ekram was a Bangladeshi architect, professor, researcher, and academician. She served as the 12th vice-chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). She was the former dean of the faculty of architecture and planning and head of the department of architecture at BUET. She was the first woman to be appointed as the vice-chancellor of BUET. She held the position from September 2014 until her death in May 2016.

Farzana Islam is a Bangladeshi academic. She is a former vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University during 2014-2022. Peek has received many awards for her scholarship, her career in teaching, and her service to the discipline of sociology and broader hazards and disaster field. On April 20, 2021 President Joe Biden nominated Peek to be a Member of Board of Directors of the National Institute of Building Sciences, subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
