Mahdi Yovari (born 9 June 1997) is an Afghan sports shooter. He competed in the men's 10 metre air rifle event at the 2020 Summer Olympics, marking Afghanistan's Olympic debut in the sport. Yovari finished 47th in the qualification round. [2] [3] [4]

Early life and career

Yovari was born in Afghanistan and raised in Iran by his mother. After leaving Afghanistan at the age of 17, he sought asylum in various countries. [5] [6] In 2017, he left his family as a teenager and settled in Nyon, Switzerland. From 2019, he was trained by Italian shooter Niccolo Campriani as part of Campriani's Make A Mark project. [7] [8] [9] Mahdi used Campriani's rifle and tripod. In 2020, he was part of the Olympic Channel's documentary series 'Taking Refuge'. [10]

Shooting competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo were originally scheduled from 25 July to 3 August 2020, due to the postponement of the Summer Olympics to 2021, the rescheduled dates were on 24 July to 2 August 2021 at the Asaka Shooting Range. Unlike in 2016, the number of shooters competing across fifteen events at these Games had been reduced from 390 to 360, with an equal distribution between men and women. Furthermore, several significant changes were instituted in the Olympic shooting program, including the substitution of three male-only events, with the mixed team competitions.

The men's ISSF 50 meter pistol was a shooting sports event held as part of the Shooting at the 1964 Summer Olympics programme. It was the eleventh appearance of the event. The competition was held on 18 October 1964 at the shooting ranges in Tokyo. 52 shooters from 34 nations competed. Nations had been limited to two shooters each since the 1952 Games. The event was won by Väinö Markkanen of Finland, the nation's second victory in the event. American Franklin Green took silver, returning the United States to the podium in the event after a one-Games absence. Yoshihisa Yoshikawa of Japan repeated as bronze medalist, the fourth man to earn multiple medals in the free pistol.

This article details the qualifying phase for shooting at the 2020 Summer Olympics. 300 quota places for the Games are entitled to the shooters coming from their respective NOCs, based on the results at designated ISSF supervised Championships subjected to the ISSF rules from September 1, 2018, to June 6, 2021. Host nation Japan has been guaranteed twelve quota places with one in each of the individual events. Four quota places will be awarded to the shooters competing in each of the mixed team events, while the highest-ranked shooter, who has not qualified yet or whose NOC does not have a berth in any of the twelve individual events, will obtain a direct Olympic quota place through the World Rankings. The remaining twenty-four quota places are available to the eligible NOCs under the Tripartite Commission Invitation, with two in each of the individual event, to attain a maximum number of 360.

William Shaner is an American sports shooter. He has competed in national and international competitions, most notably he won the gold medal in the men's 10 metre air rifle event at the 2020 Summer Olympics, the gold medal in the 10m air rifle event at the 2021 ISSF World Cup Croatia, the gold medal in the 10m air rifle event at the 2021 ISSF Junior World Championship Lima, and the bronze medal in the 50 m rifle prone event at the 2018 World Championships. Shaner also was part of the University of Kentucky rifle team that won the 2021 NCAA Rifle Championships.
