Mahesh Priyamal Jayakody (born 5 October 1987), also known as Mahesh Jayakodi or Priyamal Jayakodi, is a Sri Lankan a para-rower and a soldier. He made his debut Paralympic appearance representing Sri Lanka at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. [1] He is the first Sri Lankan rower to compete at the Paralympics. [2]
He pursued his primary and secondary education at the Dodangaslanda Central College in Kurunegala. [3]
Jayakody enlisted in the Sri Lankan Army on 12 February 2007 at the age of 20. Having passed the selection course, he joined the elite Special Forces Regiment. There he represented the Army Special Force Sports Club. He took part in the humanitarian operation in Kokkuvil in 2009 which also turned out to be his last operation. He was critically injured and became paraplegic during the final stages of the Sri Lankan Civil War on 7 April 2009 when he was serving as a staff sergeant of the Army Special Forces Unit in Puthukudiyiruppu. [3] After being injured during the humanitarian operation in 2009, he was admitted to the Army hospital and underwent medical treatment until 2012. [4]
He later pursued his interest in wheelchair dancing after completing his rehabilitation process in 2012. He was encouraged to take up the sport of para-rowing in 2015 by shot put athlete Palitha Bandara and then President of National Paralympic Committee of Sri Lanka Colonel Deepal Herath. [5] Bandara introduced him to rowing coach Lasantha Welikala. [6]
He made his international debut in paralympic rowing in 2017 after undergoing a three-month training stint in China. He participated at the 2018 Para Rowing World Championship and was placed 17th in the men's single sculls event. [1] He claimed a silver medal at the 2019 Asian Para Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. [7] He also became the first Sri Lankan rower to win a medal in an international rowing competition.
He qualified to compete in the men's singles sculls competition at the 2020 Summer Paralympics after winning a gold medal in the PR1 men's singles sculls event at the 2021 Asian Continental Regatta which was held in Tokyo. [8] [9] He eventually became the first ever Sri Lankan rower to qualify for the Paralympics. [7] He was placed sixth in the second preliminary round of the single sculls event with a timing of 11 minutes and 21.3 seconds and qualified to the repechage stage. [10] [11] [12]
Gavin Bellis is an Australian Paralympic rower. He represented Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in rowing and with Kathryn Ross won gold medals at the 2013, 2014 and 2015 World Rowing Championships. He partnered Ross at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
Erik Horrie is an Australian wheelchair basketball player and a five-time world champion rower. He was a member of the Australia men's national wheelchair basketball team. Switching to rowing in 2011, he made an immediate impact in the sport, first winning the NSW State Rowing Championships and then the National Rowing Championships in Adelaide. He has won silver medals at the 2012, 2016, 2020 Summer Paralympics and gold medals at the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018 World Rowing Championships.
Moran Samuel is an Israeli paralympic basketball player and world champion rower. She was chosen to light a ceremonial torch on Israel's Independence Day in 2019. She represented Israel at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Herath Mudiyansalage Dinesh Priyantha, also simply known as Dinesh Priyantha, is a Sri Lankan Paralympic track and field athlete who competes in javelin T46 events. He also served as an important member for the Sri Lanka Army during the Sri Lankan Civil War. He was disabled after being shot at his left arm during the final stages of the war. He is the defending Paralympic champion in men's javelin throw F46 category. On 30 August 2021, he became the first ever Sri Lankan to win a gold medal at the Paralympics when he won the men's javelin throw F46 category. He is the current Paralympic and World record holder in men's javelin throw for F46 category.

She has won various accolades in her main event, the PR2 mixed double sculls, including a bronze medal with Elton Santana at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, and a gold medal with Lucas Pagani at the 2007 World Rowing Championships. Lima has competed at every Paralympic Games that has featured rowing, and won Brazil's first Olympic rowing medal with Santana. She has also competed in the women's single sculls and indoor rowing.
