Mahesh Tenginakai (born 1 January 1971) is an Indian politician from Karnataka. He is an MLA of Bharatiya Janata Party from Hubli-Dharwad Central Assembly Constituency in Dharwad District. He won the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly Election defeating former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, who quit BJP after he was denied a ticket. [1] [2] [3]

Early life and education

Tenginakai hails from the Lingayat community in Hubli. [4] He completed his intermediate, the pre-university course. He is a businessman. [5] [6]

Career

Tenginakai was associated with the BJP for over two decades but made his debut in electoral politics only in 2023. [4] He was elected as an MLA from Hubli-Dharwad Central Assembly Constituency winning the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly Election by a huge margin. He defeated former chief minister Jagadish Shettar, who contested on Indian National Congress Party ticket by a margin of 34,289 votes. [7] [8] Shettar, a six-time MLA, was denied a ticket by BJP and he shifted to Congress but lost the seat. [7] [9] [10]

Jagadish Shivappa Shettar is an Indian politician, who served as the 15th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 2012 to 2013. He is currently serving as Member of Karnataka Legislative Council. He has subsequently served as Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He also served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly during 2008–2009. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Earlier in 2023 he had joined the Indian National Congress, where he quit the BJP on being denied the MLA ticket in 2023. He represented Hubli-Dharwad Central Vidhan Sabha seat, which he resigned in 2023 before the elections. In March 2024, he was announced as the BJP candidate from the Belgaum Constituency for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.

Municipal Corporation of the City of Hubballi-Dharward or Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) is the Municipal Corporation responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad, located in North Western part of Karnataka state in India. The organization is known, in short, as HDMC. This civic administrative body administers an area of 213 km2. HDMC consists of 82 elected members from four Vidhan Sabha constituencies of Hubballi-Dharwad. Presently the Council is under suspended animation pending election of new members. There has been a huge demand by people of Dharwad to create a separate civic body and get itself detached by HDMC. Claims are that most of the funds are allocated to Hubballi solely.

He also served as the political secretary to Jagadish Shettar during latter's tenure as the Chief Minister.

Chandrakant Bellad is the former member of Karnataka Legislative Assembly and an Indian Politician. He first contested 1983 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections as a Janata Party candidate from Dharwad Assembly constituency and lost by a wafer thin margin of 132 votes against S. R. Morey of Indian National Congress. Later he defeated the same candidate and emerged victorious in 1985 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections. He unsuccessfully contested against then 3-time Indian National Congress MP D. K. Naikar from Dharwad North Lok Sabha constituency during 1991 Indian general elections. Despite not having any BJP MLA from then Dharwad district, Chandrakant Bellad gave a close fight by getting 29% votes which was just 22,209 less than D. K. Naikar. He was elected to Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1994 and 1999. He also represented Hubli-Dharwad West from 2008 to 2013. He was the President of Border Area Development Authority from 2008 to 2013. He announced retirement from active politics before 2013 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections.

Sogadu Shivanna is a senior politician associated with Bharatiya Janata Party, Karnataka. He has served as Minister of Environment under Jagadish Shettar and as Minister of Sericulture under H. D. Kumaraswamy.

Hubli Rural was one of the 224 Vidhan Sabha seats in Karnataka Legislative Assembly that used to come under Dharwad district and it came into existence in 1972 and was abolished abolished after 2008 delimitation exercise. This seat was once held by 2 Chief Ministers S. R. Bommai and Jagadish Shettar and former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai contested in this constituency once in 1994 but lost to Jagadish Shettar.
