Mahmoud Gabr (Arabic: محمود جبر, 14 December 1935 - 27 July 2008) is a Syrian actor who significantly influenced the Syrian entertainment industry.

Early life

Gabr was born in Shahba, As-Suwayda Governorate, to a Druze family. [1]

Career

In his early youth, Gabr began his journey in theater while studying at a school in Al-Midan, Damascus. He co-founded an amateur theater group in the early 1950s with his schoolmates. To focus more on theater, he transferred to a private school offering evening classes. In 1955, he premiered his first comedy play, "Nasi Effendi." Gabr later worked in the Free Theater managed by Abdel Latif Fathy and contributed to establishing the Military Theater, where he performed in the opening production, "The Green Perfume," alongside Muna Wassef. In 1968, Jabr established his own theater group. He then transitioned to teaching at the School of Science and Arts before joining the Syrian Ministry of Culture as a theater expert. Mahmoud Gabr served as Deputy Head of the Artists Syndicate for six years from 1984 to 1990. He also ran for the People's Assembly in the sessions of 1986-1990 and 1990–1994, achieving success in both terms. [3]

Personal life

He married Haifa Wassef, the sister of Muna Wassef, [4] and they had four children. Two of their daughters, Marah and Laila, became actresses. [5] Additionally, his granddaughter Dana is also a well-known actress. [6] His brothers, Naji Jaber, known as "Abu Antar", and Haitham Jabr, known as "Abu Al-Hakam". [7]

He died in 2008 after battling with angina. [8]

The Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts (HIDA), (HIDA), was founded in Damascus, Syria, in 1977 by academics such as the playwright Saadallah Wannous, theatre critic Ghassan al-Maleh and professor of theatre at Damascus University, Hannan Kassab Hassan. The institute initiated a new phase in the development of theatre in Syria through the preparation of a new generation of playwrights, theatre directors and actors in aspects of modern dramatic arts on an academic basis, including the actor Fares Al-Helou and playwrights Liwaa Yazji and Mohammad Al Attar. The institute initially included five departments: Acting, Literary Criticism, Dramatic Arts, Scenography, and Theatre Techniques, with a department for Dance added later.

Order of Civil Merit is a Syrian decoration. It was established on 25 June 1953. The decoration is awarded for service to the state or to the Arab cause. It has five classes: the Excellent Class, awarded as a badge and star; the First Class, awarded as a badge or star; and the Second, Third, and Fourth Class, awarded as a medal. The Excellent and the First Class are worn on the breast, while the Second Class is worn on a ribbon around the neck. The Third and the Fourth Class are worn on a ribbon on the right side of a chest. The colours of the decoration's ribbon are white-green-white, each represented in equal ratio.
