Mahmudur Rahman Mazumdar (25 December 1922 [2] -19 December 2011) was a Bangladesh Army brigadier who was the most senior ethnic Bengali officer in Pakistan Army during the Bangladesh Liberation War. [3] [4]
Mazumdar was born into a Bengali Muslim family on 25 December 1922 in the village of Chandinagar in Katigora Thana,Cachar district,Assam Province,British Raj. His ancestral home was in the village of Bolramer Chok in Kaskanakpur Union,Zakiganj Upazila,Sylhet District,Bangladesh. His father was Wajid Ali Mazumdar.[ citation needed ]
After completing his primary and secondary education locally,Mazumdar studied at the Murari Chand College in Sylhet where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. [5]
In 1947,he joined the Pakistan Army. On 30 July 1949 he was commissioned in the Punjab Regiment of Pakistan Army. [6] During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965,he commanded the Sialkot Sector. He earned the status of brigadier in 1969 making him the first Bengali in the Pakistan Army to earn that title.[ citation needed ]
Mazumdar defected from the Pakistan Army at the start of the Bangladesh Liberation War,becoming the commanding officer of East Pakistan Regiment Centre [4] He was arrested and charged with treason by the Pakistan Army during the war. [7] He was tortured in custody. [8]
Mazumdar after retiring from Bangladesh Army joined the Jatiya Party. He was elected to parliament from Sylhet twice. [7]
Mazumdar died on 19 December 2011. [7]
Hamidur Rahman was a sepoy in Bangladesh Army during the Bangladesh Liberation War. Rahman was killed on 28 October 1971 at Dholoi during the Battle of Dhalai,Srimangal during an attempt to capture the Pakistani Army position. The advancing Mukti Bahini column finally captured the Dhalai Border Outpost on 3 November 1971. He was posthumously awarded the Bir Sreshtho,the highest recognition of bravery in Bangladesh. The Dhalai post was eventually captured permanently by three infantry battalions belonging to 61 Mountain Brigade,one battalion belonging to East Bengal Regiment and 7 Rajputana Rifles supported by an artillery brigade of the Indian Army fought against 12 Frontier Force Regiment of the Pakistan Army.
Munshi Abdur Rouf BS was a Lance Nayek in the 11th Wing of East Pakistan Rifles during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He enlisted in the East Pakistan Rifles on 8 May 1963,and was attached with a regular infantry unit during the War of Liberation. Rouf died on 8 April 1971 at Burighat in Chittagong Hill Tracts after causing extensive damage to the Pakistani Army with his machine gun and forcing them to retreat. He was buried at Naniarchor Upazila in Rangamati District.

He was an active columnist for the Manab Zamin and his articles and letters appeared in various national and international newspapers and magazines like The Economist,The Daily Star,The Daily Ittefaq and Prothom Alo. Sadi served as the executive director of Delta Life Insurance Company Ltd,and later founded a socio-political organization named Centre for Democratic Practice,dedicated towards fostering democracy and national consciousness and consensus in Bangladesh.
