Maida Withers is an American dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker. Withers is the founder and artistic director of Maida Withers Dance Construction Company (1974) of Washington, D.C. She is a professor at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, at the George Washington University, Washington, D.C.
Born October 13, 1936, in Kanab, Utah Withers began her exploration of dance at a young age taking classes in tap or ballet at the local dance class. Withers received her B.A in Dance and Theatre from Brigham Young University in 1958 and an M.S in Dance and Education in 1960 from the University of Utah. [1]
In 1955 Withers participated in the experimental workshop on the dance deck of Anna Halprin, in Kentfield, California. She studied with Erick Hawkins, Merce Cunningham, Lucas Hoving, Jose Limon, Alwin Nikolais, and Mary Wigman, and at the Folkwangschule, Essen-Werden. [2] [3]
In the late 1960s and 70s Withers was part of the avant-garde and a voice in the revolution that created postmodernism in dance in America. Critic Lisa Traiger described "her own style of dance has been well regarded as innovative, bold and energetic, not afraid to conquer innovative movements or conjure up interesting notions in the audience." [4]
Since 1968, Withers has created multimedia stage works featuring projected images and films and real-time interactive projects with cyber worlds, laser beams, virtual scenarios, and other electronic technologies. She has created works with rotating loudspeakers, laser beams, wireless cameras, and video installations - always with live music. Withers has initiated and directed several large-scale new media projects, collaborating with visual and performing artists, scientists, anthropologists, and others. Withers has toured internationally engaging in various projects in such diverse places as Guatemala, France, The Netherlands, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Brazil, Finland, Venezuela, Mexico, Poland, Germany, among others. [5] Her current focus is on technology and its interface with human emotional expression related to popular global culture. [6]
Her works reveal an ongoing interest in social and political issues and in juxtaposing dance and technology. [7]
Withers has been on the faculties of Purdue and Howard Universities and taught nationally as a specialist with NEA Artists-in-Schools Program and internationally for various festivals and conferences. [8] Withers directed the MFA program in choreography and performance at The George Washington University for over twenty years. [8]
Withers was Founding Director of the Washington, DC International Improvisation Plus+ Festival featuring local, national, and international dance, music, theatre, and performance art. [4]
In 1974 Withers founded the Maida Withers Dance Construction Company as she began generating new approaches to training and choreography. This not-for-profit arts organization was created to produce original dance works for stage, sites and video in a collaborative process with visual and performing artists. The company frequently collaborates with musicians, designers, and interdisciplinary artists.
The Dance Construction Company have toured throughout the US, and internationally to Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Korea, Japan, China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, France, Venezuela, Poland, Russia, and other locations. [9]

Shen Wei is a Chinese-American choreographer, painter, and director who resides in New York City. Widely recognized for his defining vision of an intercultural and interdisciplinary mode of movement-based performance, Shen Wei creates original works that employ an assortment of media elements, including dance, painting, sound, sculpture, theater and video. Frequently, critics have commented on his innovative blend of Asian and Western sensibilities, as well as his syncretic approach to performance art.
Alwin Nikolais was an American choreographer, dancer, composer, musician, teacher. He had created the Nikolais Dance Theatre, and was best known for his self-designed innovative costume, lighting and production design. Nikolais gave the world a new vision of dance and was named the "father of multi-media theater."
William Tass Jones, known as Bill T. Jones, is an American choreographer, director, author and dancer. He is the co-founder of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Jones is Artistic Director of New York Live Arts, the company's home in Manhattan, whose activities encompass an annual presenting season together with allied education programming and services for artists. Independently of New York Live Arts and his dance company, Jones has choreographed for major performing arts ensembles, contributed to Broadway and other theatrical productions, and collaborated on projects with a range of fellow artists. Jones has been called "one of the most notable, recognized modern-dance choreographers and directors of our time."

A costume designer is a person who designs costumes for a film, stage production or television show. The role of the costume designer is to create the characters' outfits or costumes and balance the scenes with texture and colour, etc. The costume designer works alongside the director, scenic, lighting designer, sound designer, and other creative personnel. The costume designer may also collaborate with a hair stylist, wig master, or makeup artist. In European theatre, the role is different, as the theatre designer usually designs both costume and scenic elements.
The Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada is a professional award-winning touring ballet company based in Moncton, New Brunswick. Marilyn Wood (1929-2016) was an American choreographer, intermedia artist, and dancer. She created contemporary, and city-scale intermedia performances known as "Celebrations". Marilyn Wood's Celebration Events is recognized for bringing communities together to celebrate their vitality and diversity in a unique experience of spectacle and participation in urban environments. Her work is recognized as helping to reinvent the spirit and drama of the ancient festival in contemporary life.

The Alonzo King LINES Ballet (AKLB) is an American contemporary ballet company based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The ballet company, founded by choreographer Alonzo King, premiered at San Francisco State University's McKenna Theatre in 1982.
Dana Tai Soon Burgess is an American choreographer and dancer. In May 2016 Burgess was named the Smithsonian's first-ever choreographer in residence at the National Portrait Gallery. His work has tended to focus on the "hyphenated person" - someone who is of mixed ethnic or cultural heritage - as well as issues of belonging and societal acceptance. Gibney Dance, founded in 1991 by choreographer Gina Gibney, is a multi-faceted dance organization occupying two locations in New York City: one at 890 Broadway in the Flatiron District and the other at 280 Broadway in Tribeca. The organization’s activities are divided into the following three interrelated fields: Center, Company, and Community. The first, Center, refers to the facility and its programming, which provide rehearsal space to nonprofit and commercial renters in addition to classes, programs, and services to the New York dance community. Company refers to Gibney Dance Company, a professional contemporary dance company operating out of the Center. Finally, Community refers to Community Action, an outreach program uniting dancers with survivors of domestic violence in shelters around New York City. In 2008, Gibney Dance was inducted into Vanity Fair’s Hall of Fame for “making art and taking action”.

Michelle Lisa Herman is an American contemporary and conceptual artist who works with sculpture, video, installation, and painting. Herman's work draws on theoretical and philosophical research, feminist and disability politics, comedy, and conceptualism and investigates ideas of agency and invisible systems of power in technologically mediated society. Herman is currently based in Washington, DC.
