The Maine Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) (established 2002) advises the Legislature, legislative leadership and legislative committees on issues related to youth.
Its statutory role as an ongoing "advisory council" to the Maine Legislature is codified in Maine Revised Statutes,Title 3, section 168-A. LYAC was the first youth council in the nation to have both an advisory relationship with legislators and the statutory authority to submit legislation. [1]
The LYAC has 16 youth members and four legislative members. The council is authorized to meet up to six times each year, including at least two public hearings, and it may conduct periodic seminars on leadership, government and the Legislature. The council is required to report biannually to the Legislature and may submit legislation to implement its recommendations. [1]

The Tasmanian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. It is one of the two chambers of the Parliament, the other being the House of Assembly. Both houses sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. Members of the Legislative Council are often referred to as MLCs.
The Maine House of Representatives is the lower house of the Maine Legislature. The House consists of 151 voting members and three nonvoting members. The voting members represent an equal number of districts across the state and are elected via plurality voting. The nonvoting members represent three of Maine's Native American tribes, though two tribes have declined to send representatives. Each voting member of the House represents around 8,800 citizens of the state. Because it is a part-time position, members of the Maine House of Representatives usually have outside employment as well. Ellen Stuart Roberts is an attorney and former Republican legislator in the U.S. State of Colorado. From 2006-2010, Roberts served as the State Representative for House District 59. In 2010, she was elected to Senate District 6 and served until her resignation at the end of 2016. The Washington State Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) is the official nonpartisan youth advisory body to the Washington State Legislature on issues related to young people in Washington. Created in July 2005, it consists of approximately 22 members, each serving a two-year term. According to state law, the mission of LYAC is to "examine issues of importance to youth, including but not limited to education, employment, strategies to increase youth participation in state and municipal government, safe environments for youth, substance abuse, emotional and physical health, foster care, poverty, homelessness, and youth access to services on a statewide and municipal basis."
Justin Loring Alfond is an American politician and real estate developer. He served as a Democratic State Senator from the 8th District, which represents much of Portland. Alfond was first elected to the State Senate in 2008 to replace Democrat Ethan Strimling; he beat former State Senator Anne Rand and Cliff Ginn. He was re-elected in 2010 and 2012. In 2012, he faced Green Independent Party Chair Asher Platts. Alfond won with 71% of the vote in a two-way race.

Rachel Talbot Ross is an American politician and activist. A Democrat from Portland, Talbot serves as the assistant Majority Leader of the Maine House of Representatives. When she was first elected in 2016, Talbot Ross was the first Black woman to serve in the Maine Legislature and the first Black legislative leader in Maine history. Talbot Ross represents District 40, consisting of the Parkside, Bayside, East Bayside, and Oakdale neighborhoods of Portland as well as the University of Southern Maine campus.
