The Malaysian Masters was a golf tournament that was held in Malaysia from 1988 until 1992. In 1991 and 1992, it was part of the PGA Tour of Australasia schedule as the tour sought to expand into Southeast Asia, [1] [2] [3] and as a result carried world ranking points in those years.

Contents

The tournament was founded in 1988 and had the richest purse in the region for an event outside of the Asia Golf Circuit, [4] with hopes that it would become one of the biggest tournaments in Asia. [5] In 1993, having been part of the Australasian Tour for two seasons, the tournament was cancelled as the tour worked towards closer ties with the Asia Golf Circuit. [3]

Official events on the tour count for World Golf Ranking points. The tour is recognised as being founded in 1973 when the PGA of Australia instituted an Order of Merit. Chen Tze-ming is a Taiwanese professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asia Golf Circuit, Asian Tour and the European Tour. In the U.S., he is often referred to as T.M. Chen. His younger brother, Chen Tze-chung, is also a professional golfer who has won tournaments on the Japanese, Asian and American tours.

The Kirin Open was a golf tournament in Japan. It was founded in 1972 as the season ending event on the Asia Golf Circuit, replacing the Yomiuri International which had been cancelled when sponsors decided to discontinue the event. It was also a fixture on the Japan Golf Tour from 1974 until 2001.

The New South Wales Open is an annual golf tournament held in New South Wales, Australia. The event was founded in 1931 as the New South Wales Close Championship, being restricted to residents of New South Wales, becoming the New South Wales Open Championship in 1958 when it was opened up to players from outside New South Wales. Norman Von Nida won the event six times, while Jim Ferrier and Frank Phillips won it five times with Greg Norman winning it four times.

The Johnnie Walker Australian Classic was a golf tournament held in Australia from 1988 to 1992. It was first played as the Bicentennial Classic to celebrate the Australian Bicentenary. From 1989 it was sponsored by United Distillers, using their Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky brand, and officially titled as the Johnnie Walker Australian Classic, and then the Johnnie Walker Classic from 1991.

The Asia Golf Circuit was the principal men's professional golf tour in Southeast Asia from the early 1960s through to the mid-late 1990s. The tour was founded in 1961 as the Far East Circuit. The first series of five tournaments was held in 1962 and consisted of the national open championships of the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, plus a final tournament held in Japan. The tour gradually grew over the subsequent years, eventually becoming a regular ten tournament circuit in 1974.

The 1962 Far East Circuit was the inaugural season of the Far East Circuit, the main professional golf tour in Asia since it was established in 1961.

The Sabah Masters was a professional golf tournament that was held annually in Sabah, Malaysia.

Hsieh Yu-shu is a Taiwanese professional golfer. Though he only won two prominent events, the 1988 Indonesia Open and the 1993 Mercuries Taiwan Masters, he was a consistent contender on the Asia Golf Circuit and Asian PGA Tour in the 1980s and 1990s. He recorded dozens of top-10s and at least a six second-place finishes between the circuits.

Patrick Burke is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour in the 1990s. His best result on the tour was when he tied for third place in the 1996 B.C. Open. He won twice on the PGA Tour of Australasia in 1994.

Hsieh Chin-sheng is a Taiwanese professional golfer. He won twice on the 1988 Asia Golf Circuit, the Hong Kong Open and the Philippine Open.

The 1994 PGA Tour of Australasia was the 23rd season on the PGA Tour of Australasia, the main professional golf tour in Australia and New Zealand since it was formed in 1973.
