Malcolm Spence (born September 22, 2006) is a Canadian junior ice hockey player for the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He is considered a top prospect eligible for the 2025 NHL entry draft.
Spence played youth hockey at the AAA level for the Mississauga Senators. During the 2021–22 season, he recorded 29 goals and 27 assists in 28 games. Following the season he was named the Greater Toronto Hockey League Player of the Year. [1]
Spence was drafted second overall by the Erie Otters in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection Draft, after Michael Misa. [2] On June 2, 2022, he signed with the Otters. [3] During the 2022–23 season, in his rookie season, he recorded 16 goals and 26 assists in 64 games. [4] [5] On September 28, 2023, Spence was named an alternate captain for the Otters for the 2023–24 season. [6] In his sophomore season, he recorded 19 goals and 43 assists in 66 games. [7]
On October 22, 2024, Spence was selected to compete in the CHL/USA Prospects Challenge. [8]

On July 13, 2023, Spence was selected to represent Canada at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. [9] [10] During the tournament he recorded four goals and three assists in five games and won a gold medal. [11] During the tournament he recorded two goals and three assists in five games. During the championship game against the Czech Republic he scored the game-winning overtime goal with seven seconds remaining in the period to help Canada win the gold medal. [12] [13]
On April 16, 2024, Spence was selected to represent Canada at the 2024 IIHF World U18 Championships and served as alternate captain. [14] During the tournament he recorded three goals and four assists in seven games and won a gold medal. [15] On April 26, 2024, during a preliminary round game against Czechia, Spence scored a goal five seconds into the game, setting a record for the fastest goal to start a game in IIHF World U18 Championship history. [16] He finished the game with two goals and one assist. [17]

The Erie Otters are a major junior ice hockey team based in Erie, Pennsylvania. They are members of the Midwest division of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), one of only three American teams in the league. The team's name refers to the North American river otter common to Lake Erie. The Otters play at Erie Insurance Arena in downtown Erie, next door to UPMC Park and the Warner Theatre.
The United States National Team Development Program (NTDP) was started in 1996 by USA Hockey as a way to identify elite ice hockey players under the age of 18, and centralize their training. There are two teams in the program: under-17 and under-18. Both teams are based in Plymouth, Michigan.
