Dacoity is a term used for "banditry" in the Indian subcontinent. The spelling is the anglicised version of the Hindi word daaku; "dacoit" is a colloquial Indian English word with this meaning and it appears in the Glossary of Colloquial Anglo-Indian Words and Phrases (1903). Banditry is criminal activity involving robbery by groups of armed bandits. The East India Company established the Thuggee and Dacoity Department in 1830, and the Thuggee and Dacoity Suppression Acts, 1836–1848 were enacted in British India under East India Company rule. Areas with ravines or forests, such as Chambal and Chilapata Forests, were once known for dacoits.
Phoolan Devi, popularly known as "Bandit Queen", was a bandit who later became a female right activist and politician from the Samajwadi Party who later served as Member of Parliament.

Prakash Chandra Sethi was an Indian National Congress politician who served as Minister of Home Affairs (1982–84) and as the 8th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh (1972–75). He was twice the chief minister of the state from 29 January 1972 to 22 March 1972 and 23 March 1972 to 22 December 1975. Ideologically he always appreciated people like Shankar Dayal Sharma, Ravi Shankar Shukla, Guru Radha Kishan and Gandhian Mahesh Dutt Mishra. He was such an influential person but he never encouraged anyone to take any advantage of it. Though much is not talked about him as a politician but he was from the selfless school of thoughts and accessible to the public. PC Sethi as he was popularly known, was widely respected by the people of Indore and nation for his work.

Pankaj Singh Pundir, popularly known as Sher Singh Rana or S. Rana, is an Indian politician who was sentenced for the 2001 vendetta-related assassination of Indian dacoit-turned-parliamentarian, Phoolan Devi. In August 2014, Rana was sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of ₹100,000 for Devi's assassination, as well as charges of conspiracy, after a 10-year trial.

Phamous (transl. Famous) is Indian Hindi-language romantic crime film directed by Karan Lalit Butani and produced by Raj Khatri, Vidisha Productions and Amitabh Chandra. The film stars Jimmy Sheirgill, Shriya Saran, Kay Kay Menon, Pankaj Tripathi, Jackie Shroff and Mahie Gill in leading roles and was scheduled to a theatrical release in India on 1 June 2018. The Official Trailer of the movie was released on YouTube on 26 April 2018.

Chaudhary Rakesh Singh Chaturvedi is an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress party from Madhya Pradesh. Hailing from the Chambal region, he has been a four-time Member of Legislative Assembly of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Bhind constituency since 1990. Previously, he had served the 13th Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly as the deputy leader of the opposition and as the leader of the opposition. Prior to that, he was a minister in Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh's cabinet between 1998 and 2003.
The Chambal is a geographical and cultural region in north-central India. It lies along the Chambal and Yamuna river valleys, in southeastern Rajasthan, southwestern Uttar Pradesh and northern Madhya Pradesh. It is well-known for its badlands and extensive ravine systems, that have hosted an untold number of dacoits.
Mohar Singh was a former dacoit bandit turned political leader. He was one of the most dreaded dacoits of the Chambal valley in the 1960s. Singh had 315 cases against him, of which 85 were murder cases.
Chhavviram Singh Yadav was a dacoit from Uttar Pradesh. One of his most trusted fellows was Udaiveer Singh from the village Nasirpur, Ghiror, UP.
