Jeddah, alternatively transliterated as Jedda, Jiddah or Jidda, is a port city in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia and the country's commercial center. It is not known when Jeddah was founded, but Jeddah's prominence grew in 647 when the Caliph Uthman made it a travel hub serving Muslim travelers going for Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. Since those times, Jeddah has served as the gateway for millions of pilgrims who have arrived in Saudi Arabia, traditionally by sea and recently by air.

In 2016, in favor of IMG Worlds of Adventure's opening date, it was announced that the mall will be revived within 10 years. According to the developers the 10 million square-foot mall will contain more than 1,000 retail outlets, a rooftop hotel, waterfront dining and entertainment, a theme park, an earth science museum, and a planetarium. It also will contain its own monorail system linked with the Dubai Metro along with a two-story underground parking garage capable of holding 10,400 vehicles.

The mall is located on the western side of the King Abdulaziz Road between the King Abdulaziz International Airport and the Red Sea coast. It covers approximately 242,200 square meters of built area. There is a hotel attached to it called "Elaf Jeddah". Main facilities are a Danube supermarket, Sparky's Games City, Virgin Megastore and Jeddah's first cinema; the VOX cinema. The cinema has 12 halls. They are 6 standard, 3 gold, 1 Imax, 1 kid, and 1 VIP. On opening it had both the biggest indoor water fountain and the largest glass covered area in Saudi Arabia.
