Mallikarjun Bande was an Indian police sub-inspector who served in the Karnataka State Police. He lost his life after getting shot on head from point blank range during the gun fight between Gulbarga police and Munna darabar, a wanted rowdy sheeter and notorious underworld sharpshooter in Gulbarga, in which he too was hunted down. Bande's hospitalization and his eventual death drew considerable public attention and sparked intense socio-political debate in Karnataka and himself being scaled up to a heroic and cult figure among the public.

Early life and career

He was born on 1 June 1974 and hails from a village called Khajuri in Aland Taluk of Gulbarga district. He started his career in Karnataka police as a Constable in 1997 and went on to become a police sub-inspector and worked in different parts of northern Karnataka. He did his schooling in Khajuri and graduated from SB College Gulbarga. [1]

Death

Prior to his death he was working as a PSI in station bazaar police station, Gulbarga. In an attempt to make a criminal called Munna Durbaar surrender, police team led by Bande surrounded Munna in his house. [2]

During the gunfire Bande was shot in head by Munna. Due to severe injuries in the brain, he lost his life. He suffered multiple organ failures and was declared dead in the early hours of 15 January 2014. [3]

During the treatment phase bande's family had requested the Karnataka government to shift him to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for further treatment. Since he was not able to gain consciousness doctors avoided him to shift from Hyderabad hospital.

Aftermath

Government of Karnataka initially announced Rs.15 Lakhs as a compensation to the family of the Bande. Owing to the public pressure Government increased the total compensation to Rs.50 Lakhs which included the monthly salary that family would get till his retirement date as on papers. [4] [5] [6]

His body was cremated in his native village Kajuri, Gulbarga district with Guard of honour by Police Department, Karnataka. [7] Around 2000 police personnel were present during cremation to control huge crowd on the occasion and tension prevailed as people blamed district Inspector General of Police for his death. [7] To control agitating people, who burnt public property like buses in protest, Government deployed more than 15 platoons of KSRP and 10 battalions of district reserved police in various places of Gulbarga district. [8] Large number of public expressed their respect to the dead cop by observing total shutdown in towns like Gulbarga, Bidar, Humnabad, Aland and Surpur. [8]

CID Probe

Opposition party of Karnataka demanded for Central Bureau of Investigation probe and Victim's wife along with a section of public staged protests for CBI probe. However Government of Karnataka ordered for Criminal Investigation and a detailed probe and report the same to government. [9] Wife of slain Munna claimed that Munna had no gun and alleged that Mallikarjuna Bande would have died by a gunshot fired by police. [10]

The life and heroic death of Mallikarjuna Bande has attracted Kannada film makers who are going to produce a motion picture in Kannada. [11]

He was conferred with the Doctorate by Mysuru University. The Karnataka Government conferred the state's highest civilian award, Karnataka Ratna, to Puneeth Rajkumar on 1 November 2022, posthumously.

Qamar ul Islam, generally referred to as Qamar Sab was an Indian politician who was the Six-term Member of the Karnataka Legislative assembly, one-term Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from Kalaburagi and All India Congress Committee secretary (AICC) in-charge of Kerala. He served as the Cabinet Minister for Housing and Labour, Minister of Municipal Administration, Public Enterprises and Minister of Wakf and the MLA from Kalaburagi-North constituency for the state of Karnataka.

Doddakoppalu Kariyappa Ravi was an Indian Administrative Service officer of Karnataka cadre, from the 2008 batch. He first came into limelight as a deputy commissioner of the Kolar district, after launching an official crackdown against the encroachment of government lands and rampant illegal sand mining in the district. Following fourteen months of service, he was transferred to Bangalore by the government of Karnataka as Additional Commissioner of Commercial Taxes (Enforcement) in October 2014. After his five months' tenure as additional commissioner which involved tax raids on major tax-evading real estate firms, he was found dead at his residence in Bangalore on 16 March 2015, under suspicious circumstances.

<i>Killing Veerappan</i> 2016 Indian film

Killing Veerappan is a 2016 Indian Kannada-language biographical crime film directed by Ram Gopal Varma, who co-wrote the film with K. Balaji. The film is based on the events leading to Operation Cocoon to capture or kill Indian bandit Veerappan. Featuring Shiva Rajkumar in the central role touted to be based on N. K. Senthamarai Kannan, the then Superintendent of police, with the Indian Special Task Force, and the spy who masterminded Operation Cocoon.

He served for five years in the Karnataka Road Transport Corporation and was instrumental in dividing the huge entity into four independent entities. He has had a small stint of police training in the U.K. He worked as Director General of Karnataka Criminal Investigation Department and retired as DGP Home Guards, Fire Force and Civil Defence in 2011. He has written many books on Indian police system and related topics,travelogues in English and Kannada languages. He is also columnist of Deccan Herald, English daily newspaper.

Valmiki Nayak was an Indian politician and a former member of Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Chittapur constituency.

Siddeshwar Swami was an Indian Hindu saint and spiritual leader known for his teachings on yoga and spirituality. Swami was the head of Jnanayogashrama, an ashram in the city of Vijayapura, in the Indian state of Karnataka. He declined the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, when it was awarded to him in 2018. He had earlier declined an honorary doctorate from the Karnatak University.
