Man As Machine is an alternative rock band from Johannesburg, South Africa founded in 2008. [2] Their debut album Nothing But A Thing was released in 2011 and their follow-up album Patterns was released in 2015. [1] [3] [4] The band currently consists of bassist Xavier Knox, drummer KJ Forde, guitarist Norden Hartman, and singer Rob Visser. [1]

History

Early history (2008-2010)

The band was founded in 2008 as a result of Telkom's failed Do Band Up competition, which had a format similar to that of Big Brother's except that all the contestants were musicians that were required to perform together. [2] [5] During the two year period thereafter, they released an EP called What Makes A Man. [1] [3]

Nothing But A Thing (2011)

In 2011, Man As Machine released their debut album Nothing But A Thing, which received generally positive reviews. [3] [6] On 22 October 2012, the music video for Burnout was released. [7] On 14 July 2013, the music video for Control was released. [8] The band performed at RAMFest's 2013 and 2014 legs as well as Oppikoppi Odyssey in 2014. [9] [10] [11]

Patterns (2015)

On 5 August 2014, Man As Machine released a new music video for the song Force, [12] which alludes to Star Wars with lyrics mentioning Midichlorians as well as the Force. [13] On 14 September 2014, the band announced via their Facebook page that they were working on their second album. [14] It was confirmed in an interview that the new album would be slated for a 2015 release. [15] The album was released on 3 March 2015 with the title Patterns. [4] In a separate interview, the band hinted at heavy touring for the new album as well as possible dates in Australia or Europe. [16] It was announced that Man As Machine would perform as a support act for one of Dead Letter Circus' South African dates in November 2014. [17] Dave Grevler of Anti Motion Studios produced the album and Dead Letter Circus' guitarist Clint Vincent mastered it. [4]

Musical style

Man As Machine's music is often referred to as alternative rock, grunge, or hard rock. [1] [2] Rob Visser's vocal technique and style is often compared to that of Chris Cornell's from Soundgarden and Audioslave fame. [3] Xavier Knox' bass playing has been likened to that of Rage Against the Machine's Tim Commerford. [18] Musically, the band has also been compared to Wolfmother and Alter Bridge. [19]

Oppikoppi was a music festival held in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, near the mining town of Northam. The festival started off focusing mostly on rock music, but gradually added more genres and now plays host to a complete mixed bag of genres. Anything from jazz, world music, house music, acoustic, comedy and all else in between can be heard on one of the multiple stages. Each year in the first week of August — except for 2017, when the festival was held in October — thousands of people used to flock to the farm to camp out in the bush and enjoy the music for several days. The festival features mostly South African bands, although international acts are included in the line-up.

"Helicopter" is a song by English rock band Bloc Party that was originally released as a stand-alone single in the UK in October 2004 and would later feature on the Little Thoughts EP, and would then be released two years later as a single from their debut album, Silent Alarm in the US. The song was received with much acclaim, reaching number 26 on the UK Singles Chart on its first release, but failing to chart in the US. Various remixes have been recorded.

Foto Na Dans was a five piece Afrikaans progressive rock band from Bellville, South Africa, fronted by singer/songwriter Le-Roi Nel. Other band members are Neil Basson, John Havemann (bass), Alex Fourie, and Dirkie Uys (drums).

Dead Letter Circus are an Australian alternative rock band from Brisbane, Queensland. Their 2010 debut album This Is the Warning debuted at No. 2 on the Australian album charts and spawned a number of singles that were played heavily on radio, and was later certified Gold and voted by listeners into Triple J's Hottest 100 Albums of All Time, at number 86. The band's third studio album, Aesthesis, was released on 14 August 2015.

Ashton Nyte is a South African-born singer, songwriter, producer, composer, author, actor, and frontman of the gothic rock band The Awakening. Nyte has released seven solo albums, in addition to eleven albums as The Awakening and several other projects and collaborations. He is considered to be a pioneer of alternative music in South Africa, and has been described as "something of a musical genius" for his typical method of composing, playing and recording each instrument himself on most of his releases. Nyte is widely known in South Africa for his chart-topping cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence" and several other top singles. Mind Assault is a heavy metal band formed in 2003, that first emerged in October 2004 under the name Mind Assault. Their members are based in Somerset West near Cape Town, South Africa. They were the first extreme metal band to use their native language Afrikaans in their music, maintaining a balanced use of Afrikaans and English in their music. This language usage results from a re-emerging consciousness among young Afrikaans people through alternative sub-cultures, reflected by bands such as Fokofpolisiekar and Kobus!, which results from a closer observation of their own cultural heritage.

RAMFest was a music festival that took place a couple of times in South African cities. RAMFest caters to electronic and indie rock music, that offers local acts.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mallory Knox</span> English alternative rock band

Mallory Knox were an English alternative rock band from Cambridge. In 2013, they released their debut album Signals which reached #33 in the UK album charts. Their second album Asymmetry was released on 27 October 2014 and reached #16 on UK Album Chart. They later released their third album Wired on 10 March 2017. Their fourth record, Mallory Knox, was released on 16 August 2019, after which they announced a farewell tour.

Junkyard Lipstick were a five-piece, female metal band from Cape Town, South Africa formed in 2011. Their songs are fast-paced, catchy, bass-heavy, and their lyrics incorporate "a playful sense of humour" with an "odd but interesting amalgamation of gore and a more delicate trace of femininity." In 2016 Junkyard Lipstick disbanded.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Stoker (band)</span>

Stoker is a hard rock band from Cape Town consisting of two sets of brothers from two rural country towns in the Western Cape. The current lineup was established in 2013 when Redge and Morgan O'Kennedy (drums) joined Chris and Jurgen Bornman (bass), the latter two having originally started as a three-piece with drummer Joe Theron. While establishing themselves on the local live scene over the next year, the band recorded their debut EP, Fox in a Hole, in 2014. After several single releases during 2016, they released their eponymous full-length album in early 2017 to local critical acclaim.
