Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury is a Bangladeshi diplomat and the current Ambassador of Bangladesh to Iran. [1] He is the former Ambassador of Bangladesh to Myanmar. [2]

Early life

Karim Khan Chowdhury was born in Habiganj District. [3] He completed his undergraduate from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in Mechanical Engineering. [4] [5]

He did his Master's in Geopolitics and Global Security at the Sapienza University of Rome. [4] He also studied Italian language and culture at the Università per stranieri di Perugia, Italy and participated in an International Law course at the University La Sapienza.

Karim Khan Chowdhury did a Chevening Fellowship on Peacekeeping and International Capacity Building at the University of Bradford, United Kingdom.

Career

In 1998, Karim Khan Chowdhury joined the Foreign Affairs Cadre of the 17th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service. [3] [5]

A career Foreign Service Officer, Karim Khan Chowdhury began his diplomatic career by serving as the First Secretary at the Bangladesh High Commission in Brunei Darussalam. [6]

He then served as Consular at the Bangladesh Embassy in Rome, Italy. [7]

After his post in Italy, Karim Khan Chowdhury was appointed as the Director of the Europe and EU wing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. [4]

Following his post as the Director of the Europe and EU wing, Karim Khan Chowdhury served as the Minister Counsellor at the Bangladesh High Commission in London, United Kingdom. [8]

From December 2012 to July 2015, Karim Khan Chowdhury served as Bangladesh's first Consul General at the Bangladesh Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. [4]

From August 2015 to February 2018, Karim Khan Chowdhury served as the Director General of South East Asia Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. [4] [9]

In February 2018, he was appointed the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Myanmar. [9] In September 2022, the government of Myanmar told Karim Khan Chowdhury that the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army and Arakan Army were to blame for artillery shells from Myanmar falling in the territory of Bangladesh. In March 2023, Karim Khan Chowdhury was appointed the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Iran replacing AFM Gousal Azam Sarker. [12] [13]

Personal life

Karim Khan Chowdhury is married to Farzana Nasrin. [4] He has two children, a daughter and a son. His son's name is Arham Farabi Chowdhury.

Insurgent attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) have led to sectarian violence perpetrated by Myanmar's military and the local Buddhist population against predominantly Muslim Rohingya civilians. The conflict has sparked international outcry and was described as an ethnic cleansing by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. In August 2017, the situation worsened and hundreds of thousands of refugees fled Myanmar into Bangladesh, with an estimated 500,000 refugees having arrived by 27 September 2017. In January 2019, Arakan Army insurgents raided border police posts in Buthidaung Township, joining the conflict and beginning their military campaign in northern Rakhine State against the Burmese military.
