The Manly Seaside Championships [1] is a men's and women's tennis event founded in 1933 as the Manly Seaside Tournament. [2] It was first played at Manly Lawn Tennis Club, Manly, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The tournament is currently branded as the Clarke & Humel Manly Seaside Championships (for sponsorship reasons). [3]

History

In 1884 the Manly Lawn Tennis Club was founded. [4] In 1933 the Manly Seaside Tournament was established. [5] The tournament was not held from 1942 to 1944 due to World War II. The championships were part of the worldwide senior ILTF Circuit through till 1982, and was not held in 1983 [6] before the event was downgraded on the tour in 1984.

In 2016 the tournament was held solely for the last time at the Manly Lawn Tennis Club. [7] Since then the event has increased in size and featuring several hundred participants annually, and played across several venues throughout the Northern Beaches. [8] The championships are currently part of ITF Australian Satellite Circuit. [9]

Australian tennis players including Ken Rosewall, Frank Sedgman, John Bromwich, Lew Hoad, Neale Fraser, Rod Laver, Fred Stolle, Joan Hartigan, Beryl Penrose, Margaret Smith, Evonne Goolagong, Christine O’Neil and Dianne Fromholtz have won the Seaside Championships. [10] Notable foreign players who have won this event included; Thomas Pollok Brown, [11] Osamu Ishiguro, Manuel Santana, [12] Althea Gibson, Angela Mortimer, Zsofia Golopencza, [13] and Lizaan du Plessis. The US Open Tennis Championships is a hardcourt tennis tournament held annually in Queens, New York. Since 1987, the US Open has been chronologically the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year. The other three, in chronological order, are the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. The Nottingham Open was originally known as the Nottingham Championships or Nottingham Lawn Tennis Tournament (1887–1967), is a tennis tournament for men and women held in Nottingham, United Kingdom, played on outdoor grass courts at the Nottingham Tennis Centre. After being discontinued in 2008, it was downgraded in 2011 to ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Women's Circuit. briefly re-established as an ATP World Tour 250 event on the men's tour in 2015 and 2016, before returning to a Challenger event in 2017, and since 2015 it has been an international event on the women's tour. The tournament is held in June as a "warm-up" for Wimbledon.

The 1880 Men's tennis tour was the fifth amateur tennis tour held that year. It now incorporated 41 tournaments staged in Australia, Great Britain and Ireland and the United States. The 1880 Wimbledon Championships was won by John Hartley against Herbert Lawford, in the Challenge Round.

The 1881 Men's tennis tour was composed of the sixth annual pre-open era tour now incorporated 65 tournaments staged in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, and the United States. The 1881 Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw. This year also saw the inaugural and important 1881 U.S. National Championships held at Newport Casino which Richard Sears won. This was also the year that the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, which is the world's first national tennis association, was founded. Renshaw then won two other big tournaments of the year, the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships and Princes Club Championships, whilst Richard Taswell Richardson won the prestigious Northern Championships.

The South of Ireland Open Tennis Championship originally called the South of Ireland Championships first established in 1876 or 1877 and also known as the Limerick Cup is a grass court tennis tournament that features both men's and women's competitions that is currently an official tour event of Tennis Ireland. It is held at the Limerick Lawn Tennis Club in Limerick, County Limerick, Ireland. The championships is the world's second oldest surviving tennis tournament after Wimbledon but the only event to have been staged continuously for the last 141 years.

Charles Gladstone Allen was a British tennis player in the early years of Wimbledon. He was an all comers finalist at 1896 Wimbledon Championships in men's doubles event partnering with his brother Roy Allen, where the lost to Reginald Doherty and Harold Nisbet. He was active from 1887 to 1914 and contested 17 career finals in singles and won 8 titles.

The Hampshire Tennis Championships or the Hampshire Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis event established in 1878 as the Bournemouth CLTC Tournament. In 1906 the Bournemouth tournament was upgraded to a county level event and renamed as Hampshire County Lawn Tennis Championships that ran continuously until 1981.

The Leicestershire County Lawn Tennis Championships or simply called the Leicestershire Championships was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1900 that ran until 1914 as an open international tennis event. In 1926 the event was reclassified as a closed tournament open only to Leicestershire residents and club players only.

The North London Hard Courts Championships was a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1920. The tournament was co held at the Gipsy Lawn Tennis Club, Stamford Hill, and the North London Hard Courts Tennis Club, Highbury London, England It ran until 1939.

The River Plate Championships or Campeonatos de Río de la Plata also known as the River Plate International Championships or Campeonatos Internacionales de River Plate was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1893 as the Buenos Aires LTC Open. In 1894 the tournaments title was changed to the Championship of the River Plate. It was first held Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The tournament ran until 1978 when it ceased to be an official event of the international tennis circuit, but it did continue for another twenty years until it was abolished in 1998.

The British Columbia Championships also known as the British Columbia Lawn Tennis Championships or the Labatts British Columbia Championships was a men's and women's international tennis tournament founded in 1886 as the Victoria Lawn Tennis Challenge Cup. also called the British Columbia Challenge Cup.

The Manitoba Championships also known as the Province of Manitoba Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1885 as the Manitoba and Northwest Territories Championships It was first played at Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The championships were part of the ILTF Circuit.

The Royal South Yarra Championships was a men's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1887 as the Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club Tournament. It was first played at Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club, South Yarra, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The tournament was staged until 1968 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Circuit.
