Mann's Chapel

Mann's Chapel is a pioneer church in Vermilion County, Illinois that was built in 1857. It is located just east of Illinois Route 1 a few miles south of the village of Rossville.

Vermilion County is a county in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Illinois, between the Indiana border and Champaign County. It was established in 1826 and was the 45th of Illinois' 102 counties. According to the 2010 United States Census, it had a population of 81,625, a decrease of 2.7% in 2000. It contains 21 incorporated settlements; the county seat and largest city is Danville.

Illinois Route 1 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Illinois. Running parallel to the Indiana border, it is also the longest state road, starting on the south side of Chicago as Halsted Street at an intersection with Interstate 57, south to a free ferry crossing to Kentucky at Cave-in-Rock on the Ohio River. This is a distance of 325.59 miles (523.99 km).

Rossville is a village in Ross Township, Vermilion County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 1,331. It is part of the Danville, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Samuel Gilbert and his son James donated land for use as a cemetery when James' eleven-day-old son Samuel died in August 1839. On April 1, 1855, Samuel and his wife donated additional land next to the cemetery for the chapel. It was built of bricks burned by Abraham Mann, who came to this area directly from England in 1832. Abraham had planned to build a new house with the bricks, but decided that the new church was more important.^[1]^[2]

The church fell into disuse in the 1920s, but was later restored through the efforts of several women's clubs in nearby Rossville.

His mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, and at least 27 other settlers were buried here in the Pioneer Cemetery. His sister Sarah Lincoln Grigsby was buried in the nearby Little Pigeon Baptist Church cemetery, across the street at Lincoln State Park.

The school's demographics currently consist of 98% white students. The 2007 graduation rate was 86.2%. The drop-out rate in 2007 was about 1%, compared to the state average of 4%. As of 2007, the school has 380 enrolled students and is one of the biggest schools in Vermilion County aside from Danville High School.

Fithian was a physician and a politician who served in the Illinois House of Representatives and Illinois Senate. In addition, Fithian donated land for and was the namesake of Fithian, Illinois, a Vermilion County village located west of Danville. Abraham Lincoln was a close friend of Fithian's, and while visiting Danville during his 1858 senatorial campaign, he stayed in the house and gave a speech from its second-floor balcony.

Elijah Bristow (1788–1872) was the first white settler to stake a claim and build a permanent cabin in 1846 in the upper Willamette Valley, in what is now Lane County, Oregon, United States. He and his wife Susannah Gabbert Bristow established the first church and donated land for the first school in Pleasant Hill.
