Marathon Music Works is a concert hall and event space located in Nashville, Tennessee. [1] It is a locally owned and operated venue in the Marathon Village neighborhood. [2]

History and Location

Originally constructed as an auto manufacturing plant to produce Marathon Automobiles in the early 1900s, Marathon Music Works was repurposed and opened its doors in November 2011 as a concert hall and event venue. [3] [4]

Marathon Music Works is situated in the Marathon Village neighborhood. The neighborhood emerged from the buildings that once housed Marathon Motor Works, a pioneering automobile factory that operated from 1910 to 1914. It held the distinction of being the first fully functional automobile manufacturing factory in the southern United States until General Motors introduced the Saturn in 1990. [5]

Name and Ownership

The venue's name, Marathon Music Works, was selected through a local community process. Residents of Nashville submitted their ideas, and the chosen name pays tribute to the building's previous use as Marathon Motor Works, an automobile manufacturer. [6]

Notable Performances

Marathon Music Works has welcomed a diverse range of national and international touring artists, establishing itself as a notable music venue. Over the years, the stage has hosted performances by Emmylou Harris, The Weeknd, Garth Brooks, Phantogram, 311, Johnny Marr, J. Cole, Spoon, Eric Church, Ice Cube, Avicii, Run The Jewels, Die Antwoord, Arctic Monkeys, Danzig, Twenty One Pilots, [7] Gary Clark Jr., [8] Ashley McBryde, [9] and Brad Paisley. [10]

Marathon Live Management

Marathon Music Works is managed by Marathon Live. In addition to Marathon Music Works in Nashville, the company manages other midsize venues such as The Signal in Chattanooga, Tennessee; The Truman in Kansas City, Missouri; The Hall in Little Rock, Arkansas, and The Hawthorn in St. Louis, Missouri. It is best known as the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974. It is owned and operated by Ryman Hospitality Properties, Inc. Ryman Auditorium was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and was later designated as a National Historic Landmark on June 25, 2001, for its pivotal role in the popularization of country music. A storied stage for Rock & Roll artists for decades, the Ryman was named a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Landmark in 2022.

Dennis Linde was an American musician and songwriter based in Nashville who has had over 250 of his songs recorded. He is best known for writing the 1972 Elvis Presley song, "Burning Love", an international hit that has been featured in at least five motion pictures. In 1994, Linde won BMI's "Top Writer Award" and received four awards as BMI's most-performed titles for that year. He never liked publicity, and shunned awards shows to the extent of having family members collect his awards for him. He wrote both words and music for most of his songs, rarely collaborating with co-writers. He earned 14 BMI "Million-Air" songs. In 2001, he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The Starwood Amphitheatre was the primary outdoor music venue in the Nashville, Tennessee area from 1986 to 2006. It was owned by Live Nation and had a capacity of 17,137. It had previously been owned by SFX Entertainment and Clear Channel Worldwide, both predecessors of Live Nation Entertainment. It was demolished in 2007 and the site, as of 2021, has not yet been redeveloped. It was not affiliated with the now-defunct Starwood hospitality company.

The Nashville Fairgrounds, also known as The Fairgrounds Nashville and the Tennessee State Fairgrounds, is an entertainment complex in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. The 117-acre (47 ha) site is located southeast of Downtown Nashville on the Nolensville Pike. The historic home of the Tennessee State Fair, today the complex is home to Geodis Park, home of Nashville SC of Major League Soccer, Fairgrounds Speedway, the Tennessee State Fairground Sports Arena, the Nashville Flea Market, and The Nashville Fair. The site is undergoing redevelopment into a mixed-use development spurred by the construction of the soccer stadium with commercial and residential use and a community park. Additionally, there is a plan to renovate and upgrade Fairgrounds Speedway to host NASCAR Cup, Xfinity and Truck Series events in conjunction with Speedway Motorsports.

Jefferson Street is a street in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S., which developed as the historic center of the city's African-American community. Three historically black universities are located near here: Fisk University, Meharry Medical College and Tennessee State University. In the 1940s-1960s, it attracted many rock and roll as well as rhythm and blues artists. It was a center for the Nashville sit-ins in the 1960s, but the construction of Interstate 40 across the street in 1968 led to its economic decline. Since 2011, Lorenzo Washington and his staff at the Jefferson Street Sound Museum, the neighborhood community music museum is conserving the musical legacies of the 1940s through 1970s.
