Marc Brierley (born 9 October 1944) is an English singer songwriter who was active as a performing musician between 1965 and 1973. [1]
Between 1966 and 1970 he wrote, performed and recorded one EP - 1966, Marc Brierley; [2] one LP - 1968, Welcome to the Citadel; [3] a second LP – 1969, Hello produced by Ashley Kozak; [4] two singles taken from the two CBS LPs – "Hold On, Hold On" – 1968, and "Lady of the Light" – 1969; and two further singles, "Stay a Little Longer Merry Ann" CBS, 1969 and "Be my Brother" CBS, 1970. In 1965, on the encouragement of Bert Jansch, Marc became a regular at Les Cousins folk club in Greek Street London, playing alongside regular performers such as John Renbourn, Sandy Denny, Al Stewart and Trevor Lucas. [6]
From 1970 to 1973, Marc Brierley continued song writing and performed live throughout the UK with guitarist Steve Cross, culminating in a UK autumn tour as Fairport Convention's support act. [7]
At the end of 1973, Marc Brierley ceased professional musical activity.
In the intervening period, Brierley's original vinyl recordings have become collectable. [8]
In 2005, Sanctuary Records Group released a double CD set titled Autograph of Time, comprising digitally remastered versions of all Marc Brierley's recorded output of 1966–1970. [9]
In 2014, Cherry Red Records Group released a compilation on the Cherry Tree label with the title, Welcome to the Citadel, using the same cover artwork as the original CBS LP release, comprising the whole of the Citadel recordings with the addition of the Transatlantic Records EP, and a further five previously unreleased tracks derived from rehearsal demos. Also in 2014, Cherry Red Records Group released a compilation on the Cherry Tree label with the title, Hello, using the same cover artwork as the original CBS LP release, comprising the whole of the Hello recordings with the addition of eight previously unreleased tracks derived from a demo session recorded by Island Records in 1973. [11]
Since the key recordings have been re-issued, Rob Hatch-Miller wrote in his review, "The anthology gives the listener a good idea of Marc Brierley's brilliant musical evolution, from his early days as a straight-faced Dylanite singer-songwriter, to the whimsical and slightly psychedelic folk pop of his later work ... a long overdue introduction to a unique and remarkable artist whose music is more than worthy of a prime spot in the folk-rock canon". [9] Brierley's work has continued to resonate: "His reputation has never stopped growing, however, and a recent CD retrospective has given him a far wider audience than before." [12]
Marc Brierley gave his first full length live performance since 1973 on 24 January 2018 at the Betsey Trotwood, Clerkenwell, London. [13]

Tír na nÓg are an Irish folk band formed in Dublin, Ireland, in 1969 by Leo O'Kelly and Sonny Condell. They are often considered one of the first progressive folk bands with other artists like Nick Drake or groups like Pentangle. Their music mainly consists of their own compositions, based on strong Celtic roots and typically featuring intricate acoustic guitar playing and close harmony singing. In their early years, they toured the folk clubs of the United Kingdom or internationally as a support act for several rock bands. Today, they regularly give concerts, especially in Ireland.
Lotus is a 1974 live album by the Latin rock band Santana, recorded at the Osaka Kōsei Nenkin Kaikan, Osaka, Japan in July 1973, during their Caravanserai Tour. The Welcome album recording sessions were completed shortly before this concert, and that album was later released in November. Lotus was originally released in 1974 as a triple vinyl LP in Japan only. This version of the album was later released internationally.
Tractor is an English rock band founded in Rochdale, Lancashire, England, by guitarist/vocalist Jim Milne and drummer Steve Clayton in 1971. Both had been members of a beat group, The Way We Live, since 1966. They are notable both for their appreciation by John Peel and Julian Cope, but also for their longevity because as of 2007, they were still performing. Skin Alley were a British progressive rock band founded by Thomas Crimble and Alvin Pope in the autumn of 1968. The original lineup consisted of Crimble on bass guitar and vocals, Pope on drums, Max Taylor on guitar, and Jeremy Sagar on lead vocals. The Ian Campbell Folk Group were one of the most popular and respected folk groups of the British folk revival of the 1960s. The group made many appearances on radio, television, and at national and international venues and festivals. They performed a mixture of British traditional folk music and new material, including compositions by Campbell. Much of their popularity flowed from the variety of their performance which included a mixture of solos, group vocals and instrumentals.
Dave Cartwright was a British singer, songwriter, guitarist and author. Born in Haslemere, Surrey, he grew up in Amblecote, West Midlands where, on lead guitar and vocal, he formed his first rock and roll group, The Crossfires, in 1959. He then joined the Kidderminster outfit The Clippers, before 'discovering' folk music in 1964. His subsequent folk club work and the signing of a deal with Transatlantic Records in 1970 enabled him to turn professional in 1971. He is best known for his 1970s solo albums and TV appearances on BBC daytime show, Pebble Mill at One, and as a former music presenter on BBC Local Radio in the UK Midlands, where he hosted two shows, 'Rock'n'Roll-The Vintage Years' and 'Folkus', an acoustic showcase. Both shows ran for over 13 years. Later in life, he produced and issued his own recordings on his Luna label, from his home studio in Worcestershire, whilst still performing in the UK and Europe.

The Grehan Sisters were an Irish folk music act of the mid to late 1960s who achieved popularity in Britain after moving to Manchester, England in 1967 from their native Boyle in County Roscommon, via a spell performing in Dublin. They disbanded around 1970 but have occasionally reunited for one-off appearances in subsequent years, most recently in 2015, while Helen continues to perform intermittently as a solo artist.
