Education

Johnson obtained his Ph.D. in botany from the University of Toronto in 2007, after which he conducted an Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Postdoctoral Fellowship at Duke University. [1] [7]

Research

Johnson's research uses concepts and methods from genetics, ecology, evolution and chemistry to look at plants and plant-animal interactions and adaptations to urban environments. [5] [8] [9] His recent work under the Global Urban Evolution Project looked at white clover populations from 160 cities to investigate responses to urban environmental change. [6] [10] [11] [12] [13] Dr. Johnson has over 100 scientific publications. [1] [3] Most cited publications include; "Ecological consequences of genetic diversity", [3] "Evolution of life in urban environments", [3] "Assembly and ecological function of the root microbiome across angiosperm plant species". The Steacie Prize is a scientific prize awarded to a scientist or engineer of 40 years or younger for outstanding research in Canada. The Steacie Prize is advertised as Canada’s most prestigious early career award. It was first awarded in 1964, to Jan Van Kranendonk, and it has since been given annually. The award is named in honor of Edgar William Richard Steacie and is funded from the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fund, which was established via contributions from colleagues and friends of Steacie.

The Global Urban Evolution Project is an international collaborative project which was started by Marc T. J. Johnson at the Centre for Urban Environments of the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). It includes partners from at least 5 continents, 26 countries, and 160 cities. As a field study of evolution, and as a global study of the effects of urbanization on evolution, its scale is unprecedented. It has been described as "the best replicated test of parallel evolution, on the largest scale ever attempted".
