Marcellus Baz BEM heads charity-based organisations in Nottingham, offering community sports facilities together with outreach to, and mentoring of, young people. In 2016, Baz was named the BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards for his support of young people in Nottingham, UK. He received the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2017 New Year Honours for services to youth boxing and the community in Nottingham. [2]

Baz has been interviewed about youth violence, [3] knife crime, [4] and UK drug culture. [5] [6] He also completed a TEDxYouth talk in 2018 entitled Your Tribe is Your Vibe. [7]

Early life

Baz was born and raised in The Meadows, Nottingham. As a youth he spent a lot of his time on the streets and soon turned to selling drugs and carrying weapons. [6] He took up boxing at a leisure centre, however hand injuries from a knife attack ended his chance at a boxing career. [6]

Charitable work

Baz registered the Nottingham School of Boxing as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in September 2014. [8] It is the sister organisation of Switch Up, [9] a Community interest company that uses its profits to facilitate sport, mentoring, counselling, education and to deliver outreach services to young people in Nottinghamshire.

In February 2022, [10] Baz established links with Mansfield District Council to take over a former community sports hall as a boxing gym. [11]

He has previously played for Sheffield Wednesday, Stockport County, Mansfield Town and Notts County. He usually plays on the right side of midfield. After his playing career, Hamshaw started coaching at Rotherham United before joining Derby County as first team coach.

Rebecca Adlington is an English former competitive swimmer who specialised in freestyle events in international competition. She won two gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 400-metre freestyle and 800-metre freestyle, breaking the 19-year-old world record of Janet Evans in the 800-metre final. Adlington was Britain's first Olympic swimming champion since 1988, and the first British swimmer to win two Olympic gold medals since 1908. After winning her first World Championship gold over 800 metres in 2011, along with silver in the 400 metres at the same meet, she won bronze medals in both the women's 400-metre and 800-metre freestyle events in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Adlington is one of the few people to have won Olympic Games, World Championships, continental championships and Commonwealth Games gold medals, although she did not win a set in any one event.

The BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award is an award given annually as part of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony each December. The award is given to the sportsperson who has made a substantive yet unrecognised contribution to sport. Sportspeople are nominated by the public, and must be aged 16 years or over on 1 January that year. Nominees may not put themselves forward or be nominated by a member of their immediate family. A nominee must actively help others participate in a sport at any level on a voluntary basis. The work they do must not be part of their job or take part within their places of work, and they must not be a participant in the sporting group they are helping. Previous winners of the award are ineligible for nomination. One winner is selected from each of the twelve BBC English Regions, and the three national regions: BBC Scotland, BBC Wales, and BBC Northern Ireland. A judging panel then chooses the Unsung Hero winner from the fifteen regional winners.

It is the largest town in the wider Mansfield Urban Area and the second largest settlement in Nottinghamshire. It gained the Royal Charter of a market town in 1227. The town lies in the Maun Valley, 12 miles (19 km) north of Nottingham. It had a population of 110,500 at the 2021 census, according to the Office for National Statistics. Awarded annually by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the main award honours an individual's British sporting achievement over the past year, with the winner selected by public vote from a sixteen-person shortlist. The winner was Tennis player Andy Murray, who became the first person to win the award three times. The event, broadcast live on BBC One, was hosted by Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan.
