Marcus Free is an Australian former rower.
Free was born in Hobart, Tasmania. His father Reg Free rowed in numerous King's Cup crews for Tasmania from 1962 and in 1967, became the first Tasmanian oarsman selected to row in the Australian men's eight when they competed by invitation at the 1967 European Rowing Championships in Vichy, France. The family relocated to Queensland in 1983 and in the next decade Reg Free coached several Queensland King's Cup crews and coached his sons Marcus and younger brother Duncan to state, national and international victories. Marcus now dedicates his time to coaching at Griffith University. His athletes include his oldest son Jackson.
Free first made state selection for Queensland in the 1996 men's senior eight contesting the King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. [2] He rowed in further King's Cup races for Queensland in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. [3] He rowed in all five of those King's Cup crews with his brother. [4]
Marcus and Duncan, coached by Reg, were paired in the men's double scull at two world championships - 1997 in Aiguebelette and 1998 in Cologne. They took a bronze medal at Lac d'Aiguebelette, France in 1997. [5] [6] Before those World Championships they'd rowed at World Rowing Cups in Europe in each of those years. [5] Free has also won the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta twice in the Double Sculls Challenge Cup, both in 1996 and 1997, with Peter Antonie and Duncan Free (brother), respectively.
Marcus has also gone on to become a successful rowing coach, coaching Cormac Kennedy-Leverett to a Silver medal at the 2018 World Junior Rowing Championships held in Racice, Czech Republic. Free again also coached Kennedy-Leverett to a 7th at the 2019 World Under 23 Rowing Championships held in Sarasota-Bradenton, USA.
Tom Laurich is an Australian former rower – a junior world champion, a national champion, an Olympian and a medallist at World Championships. He has coached crews at the elite world class level.
Stuart Reside is an Australian former rower. He was an Australian national champion, a two-time underage World Champion, a dual Olympian and a medalist at senior world championships and Olympics.
Duncan Seth Free is a retired Australian rower and Olympic gold medallist. He is 4-time Olympian and two-time world champion who represented Australia at four world rowing championships in both sculls and sweep oared boats. He was a six-time Australian national sculling champion.
Anthony John Edwards is an Australian former lightweight rower. He is a five time Olympian, triple Olympic medallist, a world champion and a six-time Australian national champion. He represented Australia at the premier world regattas consistently over a twenty-year period from 1993 to 2012.
David William Crawshay is an Australian former rower, an eleven-time national champion, an Olympic champion and medalist at World Championships. He represented Australia in rowing at three consecutive Olympic games from Athens 2004 to London 2012.
Boden Joseph "Bo" Hanson is a four time Australian Olympian rowing, three time Olympic medalist, specialist coaching consultant, corporate trainer and presenter. Hansen won his three bronze medals at the Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004) Olympic games His professional career includes founding high-performance consultancy Athlete Assessments in 2007, and Team8 which presents to corporate audiences.
The Australian Rowing Championships is an annual rowing event that determines Australia's national rowing champions and facilitates selection of Australian representative crews for World Championships and the Olympic Games. It is Australia's premier regatta, with states, clubs and schools sending their best crews. The Championships commence with the National Regatta - men's, women's and lightweight events in open, under 23, under 19, under 17 and school age events. Rowers at the National Regatta race in their local club colours with composite crews permitted. The Championships conclude with the Interstate Regatta - currently eight events competed by state representative crews or scullers selected by the state rowing associations. The states compete for an overall points tally which decides the Zurich Cup.
Daniel Noonan is an Australian former representative rower. He was a national champion, a world champion, a dual Olympian and an Olympic medal winner.
Simon Burgess is an Australian national champion, two-time World Champion, three-time Olympian and dual Olympic silver medal-winning lightweight rower. He represented Australia ten times at World Rowing Championships between 1990 and 2002. He won world and national championships in both sculls and in sweep-oared boat classes during an eighteen-year elite level career.
Paul Reedy is an Australian former rower. He is a dual Olympian, an Olympic and Commonwealth Games silver medalist who competed over a seventeen-year period at the elite level. He was a fourteen-time Australian national champion across both sculling and sweep-oared boats and then coached six Australian crews to national championship titles. He later coached at the London Rowing Club and was appointed as British national Head Coach from 2009. He took Great Britain's lightweight women's sculling crews to Olympic and World Championship gold medals in 2012 and 2016.

Ronald Charles Snook is an Australian former representative rower. He is an Olympic medallist and was a six-time Australian national champion. He won his Olympic bronze medal at Atlanta 1996 in the quad scull. He made seven state appearances for Western Australia in King's Cup eights between 1992 and 2000.
Haimish John Karrasch is an Australian former rower. He was a nine-time Queensland state representative, an eight-time Australian national champion, a dual Olympian and won a silver medal at the 1999 World Rowing Championships.
Alexander (Steve) Purnell is an Australian rower. He is an Olympic and national champion who has represented at underage and senior world championships. In 2018 in an Australian eight, he won the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta. He rowed in the bow seat of the Australian men's coxless four to a gold medal victory at the Tokyo Olympics.
Edward Officer Hale is an Australian former rower. He competed at the elite level over a fifteen-year period from 1970 to 1984, primarily as a sculler. He was a fourteen time Australian national champion - nine times in a single scull, four times in crewed sculling boats and once in a sweep oared pair. He won the New Zealand national single sculls championship in 1976. He represented at two World Rowing Championships and competed in the men's single sculls event at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
Jim Stride is an Australian former representative rower. He was a six-time Australian national champion, raced in the Australia men's eight at the 1978 World Rowing Championships and competed in the men's coxless pair event at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Gordon Clubb is an Australian former rower. He was an eight-time national champion rower who represented at three world championships. He won four consecutive Australian national championship titles in a coxed four from 1977 to 1980.
Caleb Antill is an Australian representative rower. He is an Olympian, a multiple Australian national champion, was a 2016 U23 world champion and has represented at World Rowing Championships, winning medals in 2018 and 2022. He raced in the Australian men's quad scull at Tokyo 2021 to a bronze medal.
Paul Francis Rowe was an Australian representative rower and elite level rowing coach. He was an eight-time Australian national champion in both sweep oared and sculling boats across both lightweight and open divisions. He was Australia's lightweight sculling representative at the 1975 World Rowing Championships. He coached scullers and crews to three Australia national title wins and to world championships and to Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
Cormac Kennedy-Leverett is an Australian representative rower. He was a 2017 Junior World Champion, has represented at U23 World Championships and made the Australian senior squad in 2023.
