Marcus Montana was the stage name of Marcus Lagudi, an Australian pop performer from the late 1980s. He was known for his debut single, "Tell Him I'm Your Man" (mid-1989), which was not a commercial hit. However, it has been long remembered in the Sydney area and was extensively covered in the local papers during and long after his debut. [1] [2] His brief music career was the subject of a retrospective by Jack Marx in 2005 for The Sydney Morning Herald . [3] Lagudi is the middle of three sons of Italian-Australian greengrocers; all three had attended a private eastern suburbs school, Waverley College.
Montana is largely remembered as an early example of viral marketing, the launch of his brief career in mid-1989 was preceded by a poster campaign in Sydney, which covered thousands of walls, billboards, and telephone poles with posters that declared: "Marcus is Coming". [4] As intended the campaign generated discussion on radio, and expectations in the media and community. While the campaign itself was successful in making Montana's debut a talking point, his subsequent music career was a failure. [4] His manager, Paul Lagudi, is also his brother. [2]
Montana had recorded his debut single, "Tell Him I'm Your Man", in secret at Music Mill Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. [3] It was co-written by Lagudi with Janice Slater. [5] The B-side is "End of the Line". The single peaked at number 146 on the Australian ARIA singles chart in October 1989. [6] During his brief pop career Montana worked with Michael Vidale, the bass guitar player with Jimmy and the Boys, Louis Burdett on drums and guitarist Tim Freedman, who was later the founding mainstay member of the Whitlams. [3] [4] Montana had a repertoire of nine songs, one was a ballad, which was performed "very slow" with him "singing it two beats out of time... It was a horrible cacophony, and it was unstoppable." [3]
"Tell Him I'm Your Man" appearance was heralded by a second poster campaign, which advertised "Marcus is Here!" and provoked a barrage of criticism from music reviewers. [3] According to James Cockington of The Sydney Morning Herald (October 1989), when JJJ broadcast the single, "within 34 seconds all eight incoming lines were jammed, all wanting to stop the record, at once." [2] Andrew Mueller of rock newspaper, On the Street described the song as a "sack of shit." [3] Freedman later reflected, "[his] family were trying to make young Marcus Montana a rock'n'roll star, without the conventional backing of the corporate industry." [4] Largely because of the poster campaign and his apparent inexperience, Montana quickly became a figure of ridicule. Roy Williams of The Australian reviewed Jack Marx' book, Australian Tragic: Gripping Tales from the Dark Side of Our History (2009), which dealt with various stories from Australia's history. [7] Many are horrific, however "Some stories are more quirky than horrific. One concern a reported alien abduction that took place near Grafton in 1996, another the 'rise and fall of Marcus Montana, a true rock legend' in the Sydney music scene of 1989." [7]
Montana played a series of gigs in Sydney – an outdoor concert at Darling Harbour and a series of performances in Westfield and Roselands shopping centres – but they were noteworthy more for the audience heckling the singer than anything else. [3] Freedman wore a wig, in an attempt to disguise himself, when backing Montana. [3] Another gig was at the popular pub-rock venue, Selinas, in Coogee. [3] Freedman contacted his friend, Steve Pavlovic to book Marcus for his last show, at The Lansdowne Hotel, Broadway on 29 December 1989. [3]
Midnight Oil are an Australian rock band composed of Peter Garrett, Rob Hirst (drums), Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey (guitar). The group was formed in Sydney in 1972 by Hirst, Moginie and original bassist Andrew James as Farm: they enlisted Garrett the following year, changed their name in 1976, and hired Rotsey a year later. Peter Gifford served as bass player from 1980 to 1987, with Bones Hillman then assuming the role until his death in 2020. Midnight Oil have sold over 20 million albums worldwide as of 2022.
Paul Francis McDermott, who performs as Paul Mac, is an Australian electropop musician, singer-songwriter, producer and music re-mixer. He was classically trained at Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Mac has formed various bands including Smash Mac Mac (1986–88), The Lab (1989–1998), Itch-E and Scratch-E (1991–present), Boo Boo Mace & Nutcase (1996–98), and The Dissociatives (2003–2005). Mac has released two solo albums, 3000 Feet High and Panic Room – both appeared in the top 40 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
Young Einstein is a 1988 Australian comedy film written, produced, directed by and starring Yahoo Serious. It is a fantasized account of the life of Albert Einstein which alters all people, places and circumstances of his life, including relocating the theoretical physicist to Australia, having him splitting the atom with a chisel, and inventing rock and roll and surfing.
Malcolm Mitchell Young was an Australian musician who was the co-founder, rhythm guitarist, backing vocalist and songwriter of AC/DC. Except for a brief absence in 1988, he was with the band from its beginning in 1973 until retiring in 2014 due to health reasons. As a member of AC/DC, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
John Inglis Young, OAM, known professionally as John Paul Young, is a Scottish-born Australian pop singer who had his 1978 worldwide hit with "Love Is in the Air". His career was boosted by regular appearances as a performer and guest host on national broadcaster, ABC's 1974–1987 TV series, Countdown. Besides "Love Is in the Air", Young had top ten chart success in Germany and the Netherlands with "Standing in the Rain" and four other top ten hits in South Africa, including No. 1 hits with "I Hate the Music" in 1976 and "Yesterday's Hero" in 1975.
Robert George Hirst is an Australian musician from Camden, New South Wales. He is a founding member of rock band Midnight Oil on drums, percussion and backing vocals from the 1970s until the band took a hiatus in 2002. The band resumed activity as a group in 2017. Hirst also wrote a book, Willie's Bar & Grill, recounting the experiences on the tour Midnight Oil embarked on shortly after the 11 September terrorist attacks in 2001.
Archibald William Roach was an Australian singer, songwriter and Aboriginal activist. Often referred to as "Uncle Archie", Roach was a Gunditjmara and Bundjalung elder who campaigned for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. His wife and musical partner was the singer Ruby Hunter (1955–2010).
Paul Anthony Dempsey is an Australian musician. He is best known as the lead singer, guitarist and principal lyricist of rock group Something for Kate. Dempsey released his debut solo album, Everything Is True, on 20 August 2009, which peaked at No. 5 on the ARIA Albums Chart. He has also produced and co-written albums for other artists, including Mosman Alder.
"No Aphrodisiac" is a song by Australian band the Whitlams, released in December 1997 as the second single from their third album, Eternal Nightcap. The song peaked at No. 59 on the Australian Singles Chart. The lead track was written by the band's founding mainstay, Tim Freedman, together with Pinky Beecroft and Chit Chat Von Loopin Stab : both from the band, Machine Gun Fellatio. It was produced by Freedman with Rob Taylor. "No Aphrodisiac" won Song of the Year at the ARIA Music Awards of 1998. It was listed at No. 1 on their Hottest 100 for 1997. Former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, for whom the band was named, announced news of their win on air. One of its B-sides is "Gough". Machine Gun Fellatio provided a re-mix of "No Aphrodisiac" for the remixes version of the single.
Stephen Carlton Wright was an Australian singer, songwriter, and musician. Called Australia's first international pop star, he is best known for being the lead singer of the Easybeats, who are widely regarded as the greatest Australian pop band of the 1960s.
Philip Jamieson is an Australian musician from Hornsby, New South Wales. He is a founding member and singer-guitarist for the rock band Grinspoon.
Timothy James Freedman is an Australian musician, best known as the mainstay lead singer and keyboardist of the Australian band The Whitlams formed in 1993. The song "No Aphrodisiac", co-written by Freedman, was their break-through hit in 1997; their top four ARIA albums by sales are Love This City (1999), Torch the Moon (2002), Little Cloud (2006), and their compilation album Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You: Best of the Whitlams in 2008.
Melissa Morrison Higgins, known professionally as Missy Higgins, is an Australian singer-songwriter and musician. Her Australian number-one albums are The Sound of White (2004), On a Clear Night (2007) and The Ol' Razzle Dazzle (2012), and her singles include "Scar", "Steer" and "Where I Stood". Higgins was nominated for five ARIA Music Awards in 2004 and won 'Best Pop Release' for "Scar". In 2005, she was nominated for seven more awards and won five. Higgins won her seventh ARIA in 2007. Her third album, The Ol' Razzle Dazzle, was released in Australia in June 2012. As of August 2014, Higgins' first three studio albums had sold over one million units.
The Radiators are an Australian pub rock band formed in September 1978. Mainstay members are Brian Nichol on lead vocals, Stephen "Fess" Parker on guitar and Geoff Turner on bass. In 1989 they were joined by Mark Lucas on drums. Their most popular albums are Feel the Heat and Scream of the Real, which both peaked in the top 25 of the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart. Their best known songs are "Comin' Home", "No Tragedy" and "Gimme Head". Rock music historian, Ian McFarlane described the group as "an archetypal, hard-working pub-rock band capable of delivering tightly crafted, well-executed, hard-hitting metal-pop anthems backed by a playful sense of humour. The band toured constantly, racking up over 2500 gigs by the early 1990s".
"In Love Again" is a song by Australian electronic rock group Rogue Traders. It was sent to radio in August 2006 as the fifth and final single in August 2006 from their second album Here Come the Drums. The coda of the song features a sample of "Head Over Heels" by Tears for Fears.
Jackson Gregory Marx, known as Jack Marx, is an Australian journalist and author. He was born in Maitland, New South Wales.
Alison MacCallum, also written Alison McCallum, is an Australian rock singer from the late 1960s and 1970s. Her two studio albums are Fresh Water and Excuse Me. In March 1972 she issued her most successful charting single, "Superman", which peaked at No. 12 on Go-Set's National Top 40. In August that year MacCallum provided lead vocals for the Labor Party's campaign theme song, "It's Time", for the 1972 election. By the late 1970s, she had concentrated on session work and then "disappeared from public view". According to Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, MacCallum was "a soul/blues stylist of considerable flair and passion". In September 2014 Sony released a 2× CD compilation album, The Essential Alison MacCallum.
Samuel Dixon is a record producer, songwriter and musician, based in London. Dixon has produced and written with artists including Adele, Sia, Kylie Minogue, Christina Aguilera, Paloma Faith and Jack Savoretti. He is a multi-instrumentalist, best known for his work as a bass guitarist.
Andrew Peter Duffield is an Australian musician, producer and teacher. He has been a member, on keyboards, synthesisers or electronics, for various groups, including Whirlywirld, Models and Absent Friends. Duffield has also been a backing musician for other artists both on tours and for studio sessions.
Ruel Vincent van Dijk, known mononymously as Ruel, is a British-Australian singer and songwriter from Sydney, best known for his singles "Don't Tell Me", "Younger", "As Long as You Care" and "Painkiller". At the ARIA Music Awards of 2018, he won the award for Breakthrough Artist for his single "Dazed & Confused". Ruel's debut studio album was released on 3 March 2023.
