Margaret Joy Kouvelis MNZM (born 1949) is a New Zealand local-body politician. She was the 5th Mayor of Manawatu,holding the position from 2012 to 2016.
Kouvelis was born in Nelson. [1] She studied at the University of Auckland,and subsequently became a teacher in Queen's High School in Dunedin. [1] After spending time in the United Kingdom,she was a teacher at Dunstan High School in Alexandra,and then at Freyberg High School in Palmerston North,before moving to Massey University's Centre for Educational Development. [2] In 2002 she was appointed director of the New Zealand Teachers' Council,but resigned a year later. [3] She subsequently became a consultant,edited a Presbyterian magazine,farmed olives,and ran a bookshop. [1]
Kouvelis is the mother of former All Black Mark Ranby. [1]
In 2010 Kouvelis was elected to the Manawatu District Council. [4] In 2012 she won a by-election for Mayor following the resignation of Ian McKelvie,and was re-elected unopposed in 2013,but lost the mayoralty to Helen Worboys in 2016. [5]
ManawatūDistrict is a territorial authority district in the Manawatū-Whanganui local government region in the North Island of New Zealand,administered by ManawatūDistrict Council. It includes most of the area between the ManawatūRiver in the south and the Rangitīkei River in the north,stretching from slightly south of the settlement of Himatangi in the south,to just south of Mangaweka in the north,and from the Rangitīkei River to the top of the Ruahine Range in the east. Richard Mark Ranby is a former New Zealand rugby union player. A midfield back,Ranby represented Manawatu,the Central Vikings and Waikato at a provincial level,and the Hurricanes and the Chiefs in Super Rugby. He played one international for the New Zealand national side,the All Blacks,against Samoa in 2001. He played for the Japanese side Coca-Cola West Red Sparks for two seasons from 2006. He spent a year studying at the University of Cambridge in 2008–09,completing a Diploma in Theology and Religious Studies,and played for Cambridge against Oxford in the 2008 Varsity Match. In 2012 he was appointed professional development manager for the Crusaders and Canterbury Rugby.
