Margaret Ramsay-Hale is a Jamaican lawyer and judge. She is currently serving as a justice of the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands,a position that she has held since 13 January 2020. Ramsay-Hale was previously the first female puisne judge and the first female chief justice of the Supreme Court of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Ramsay-Hale was born in Kingston,Jamaica. She is the daughter of Ian Ramsay,the first Jamaican lawyer to be appointed as a Queen's Counsel,and Rosa Ramsay. [1] [2] She moved to England to study for her A-Levels in 1977. She received a bachelors of science degree in economics from the London School of Economics in 1981. She began studying law at the University of the West Indies in September 1986 and attended the Norman Manley Law School. [2] [3] While she was studying at law school,Ramsay-Hale worked as a model,including in runway shows choreographed by Bert Rose. [4]
She was called to the bar in October 1991 and began her career practicing privately in the chambers of Howard Hamilton QC. [5] She is certified as a mediator. She was appointed as a crown council in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in January 1994. [6]
Ramsay-Hale was a family court judge in St James,Jamaica,and a magistrate in the parish's criminal courts. [1] She moved to the Cayman Islands in September 1998,where she served as a magistrate in the Summary Court for ten years and as chief magistrate for three years. [3] [6] [7] She was an acting judge for the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands in 2006 and was an appointed member of the Cayman Islands Panel of Acting Grand Court Judges in 2013. [6]
She was appointed by Governor Ric Todd as a puisne judge for the Supreme Court of the Turks and Caicos Islands on 1 November 2011,becoming the first woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court. [8] [3] [9] Ramsay-Hale was promoted to chief justice by Governor Peter Beckingham,following consultation by the Judicial Service Commission,on 19 June 2014. [9] [10] She was the first female chief justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands. [1] She was sworn into this position on 22 September 2014. [11] She served as the presiding judge for the civil and commercial divisons and worked in the criminal and matrimonial and family divisions. [6] She was re-appointed for a further three-year term on 10 October 2017 by Governor John Freeman. [5] She officially resigned the position on 10 January 2020. [3]
Ramsay-Hale was appointed a judge of the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands by Governor Martyn Roper,which became effective on 13 January 2020. [6]
The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory consisting of the larger Caicos Islands and smaller Turks Islands,two groups of tropical islands in the Lucayan Archipelago of the Atlantic Ocean and northern West Indies. They are known primarily for tourism and as an offshore financial centre. The resident population was 31,458 in 2012,of whom 23,769 lived on Providenciales in the Caicos Islands;July 2021 estimates put the population at 57,196. It is the third largest of the British overseas territories by population.

Michael Eugene Misick is a Turks and Caicos Islander politician who was the 7th Chief Minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands from 15 August 2003 to 9 August 2006 and was the 1st Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands from 9 August 2006 to 23 March 2009. Misick is a member of the Progressive National Party (PNP),and became chief minister when his party,after eight years as the opposition party,gained two parliamentary seats in by-elections. In addition to being premier,he was also the minister for Civil Aviation,Commerce and Development,Planning,District Administration,Broadcasting Commission,Tourist Board,Turks and Caicos Investment Agency,and Tourism. Several other members of Misick's family have been politicians in the Turks and Caicos Islands,and important leaders in the PNP. Washington Misick,his brother,is the current Premier,former Chief Minister and former Minister of Finance.
Before European colonization,the Turks and Caicos Islands were inhabited by Taino and Lucayan peoples. The first recorded European sighting of the islands now known as the Turks and Caicos occurred in 1512. In the subsequent centuries,the islands were claimed by several European powers with the British Empire eventually gaining control. For many years the islands were governed indirectly through Bermuda,the Bahamas,and Jamaica. When the Bahamas gained independence in 1973,the islands received their own governor,and have remained a separate autonomous British Overseas Territory since. In August 2009,the United Kingdom suspended the Turks and Caicos Islands' self-government following allegations of ministerial corruption. Home rule was restored in the islands after the November 2012 elections.
Politics of the Turks and Caicos Islands takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic dependency,whereby as of August 9,2006 the Premier is the head of government,and of a multi-party system. Mahala Wynns is a Turk and Caicos Islander politician who served as the Deputy Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) from 9 August 2006 to 15 October 2013. She was also the Acting Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands in 2005 and 2008.
Sir Edward Zacca was chief justice of the Jamaican Supreme Court from 1985 to 1996. Mabel Maame Agyemang,née Banful is the current Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands. An expert superior court judge with a judicial career spanning decades,Justice Agyemang served in the judiciaries of the governments of Ghana,The Gambia and Eswatini prior to her current role in the Turks and Caicos Islands. She was also the first female Chief Justice of The Gambia.
Josephine Olivia Connolly MP is a businesswoman and an elected member of the Turks and Caicos Islands House of Assembly. In February 2021 she won her all island seat for the third time and was appointed as a Minister in the new PNP Governmnent.
