Margherita Wood McCandlish (December 31,1892 - August 25,1954) is an American former First Lady of Guam.
On December 31,1892,McCandlish was born as Margherita Wilson Wood in Manhattan,New York City,New York. McCandlish's father was Franklyn Wilson Wood. McCandlish's mother was Clara Wilson Wood. McCandlish has two brothers,Ralph Frederick Wood and Franklyn Wilson Wood Jr. [1] [2]
In 1936,when Benjamin McCandlish was appointed as the military Governor of Guam,McCandlish became the First Lady of Guam on March 27,1936,until February 8,1938. [3]
On June 12,1914 in Manila,Philippine Islands,McCandlish married Benjamin Vaughan McCandlish,who later became a United States Navy officer and the 36th Naval Governor of Guam. McCandlish and her family lived in places such as Guam and near Bishopsville,South Carolina. [4] [5]
McCandlish's brother Ralph Wood became an Ensign in the United States Navy,and later a Rear Admiral. [5] [6]
On August 25,1954,McCandlish died in a hospital in Hartsville,South Carolina. McCandlish is interred at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg,Virginia. [4] [7]
After McCandlish's death,her husband remarried. On October 16,1975,McCandlish's husband died in Darlington,South Carolina. He is interred at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg,Virginia. [7]
University of Guam (U.O.G.) is a public land-grant university in Mangilao,Guam. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and offers thirty-four degree programs at the undergraduate level and eleven at the master's level. Blandford Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in Petersburg,Virginia. Although in recent years it has attained some notoriety for its large collection of more than 30,000 Confederate graves,it contains remains of people of all classes and races as well as veterans of every American war. It holds the largest mass grave of 30,000 Confederates killed in the Siege of Petersburg (1864–65) and other battles during the American Civil War. Although only 3,700 names of the interred are known,it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992,in part through the efforts of Charlotte Irving,first president of the Historic Blandford Cemetery Foundation. In addition to this cemetery's historic African American section discussed below,it is located adjacent to the People's Memorial Cemetery,a historic African-American cemetery,and small cemeteries containing additional dead from the lengthy Siege of Petersburg and Battle of the Crater in 1864.
John Thomas O'Sullivan is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback for nine seasons in the National Football League (NFL),two seasons in NFL Europe and one season in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football for the UC Davis Aggies of the University of California,Davis,where he was a three-year starter and threw for career totals of 10,745 yards and 96 touchdowns. Jared Scott Norris is an American former professional football linebacker who played for the Carolina Panthers and Washington Football Team of the National Football League (NFL). He played high school football at Centennial High School in Bakersfield,California,where he was a three-year starter and three-year letterman. He also earned All-State honors his senior year. Norris played college football at Utah,where he was a three-year starter and four-year letterman. His senior year in 2015,he was named second-team All-Pac-12 and played in the Senior Bowl. During his college career,Norris played in 42 games and started 32 of them. He recorded 269 total tackles,seven sacks,eight pass breakups,four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. After going undrafted in the 2016 NFL draft,Norris signed with the Panthers. He played in 28 games for the Panthers from 2016 to 2018 and made 11 total tackles. He also appeared in 16 contests for the Washington Football Team from 2020 to 2021,recording six total tackles. Norris was primarily a special teams player during his NFL career. Of the 807 career snaps he took part in,800 were on special teams.
Gregory Brian Mancz is an American professional football offensive lineman who played in the National Football League (NFL) from 2015 to 2022,primarily with the Houston Texans. He was lightly recruited out of high school in 2010 and ended up playing college football for the Toledo Rockets of the University of Toledo,where he was a four-year starter at several positions along the offensive line. He earned various All-American and All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) honors during his college career. His senior season in 2014,he won the Vern Smith Leadership Award,which is given to the best player in the MAC. Mancz went undrafted in the 2015 NFL draft and signed with the Texans shortly thereafter.
