Maria Machongua (born 31 January 1993) is a Mozambican boxer, who competed for her country at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. In the lightweight class, she won one of the bronze medals, the first such medal anyone from her country had won in boxing.
Maria Machongua was born on 31 January 1993, in Maputo, Mozambique. [1] She since took up boxing, becoming the national champion in the women's lightweight division. For the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, she was coached by Northern Irish trainer Harry Hawkins alongside the rest of the Mozambique boxers. [2] Hawkins said of Machongua when he first met her, "She was completely unknown to us, but you could tell taking her on the pads that she wasn't bad - and she listened intently to what you were saying". [3]
Machongua was one of several boxers to represent Mozambique. [4] She needed to increase weight to compete in the 60 kilograms (130 lb) class, as she normally fights at 54 kilograms (119 lb). Each morning before weigh-ins, she needed to eat and drink in order to meet the minimum weight of 57 kilograms (126 lb) for the class. [3] However, she was the only one to make it past the first round, defeating Lesotho's Nthabeleng Mathaha. [4] Machongua won again in the second round, setting up a match in the semi-finals with former world champion Laishram Sarita Devi of India. [3] She was defeated by Devi 3-0, [5] automatically winning one of the two bronze medals in the competition. This was the first time a boxer from Mozambique had won a medal at the Games. [3]

The competitions were held on Wednesday, September 21, 1904 and on Thursday, September 22, 1904. Contestants in lighter weight classes could also compete in heavier classes. Oliver Kirk, winning the bantamweight and featherweight categories, thus became the only boxer to have won two gold medals in the same Olympics. George Finnegan, Harry Spanjer and Charles Mayer won one gold and one silver medal.

William Irwin (born May 20, 1968, Niagara Falls, Ontario, nicknamed "Billy the Kid", is a retired Canadian amateur lightweight and professional light/light welter/welterweight boxer of the 1990s and 2000s who as an amateur won a bronze medal in the Boxing at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba, losing to eventual silver medal winner Patrice Brooks of the United States, represented Canada at the 1991 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Sydney, Australia losing to Julien Lorcy of France. He represented Canada at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona but was stopped in the second round of the lightweight division by Ronald Chavez of the Philippines.
Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom is an Indian amateur boxer, politician, and former Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. She is the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times, the only female boxer to have won a medal in each one of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer to win eight World Championship medals. Nicknamed Magnificent Mary, she was the only Indian female boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, where she competed in the flyweight (51 kg) category and won a bronze medal. She had also been ranked as the world's No. 1 female light-flyweight by the International Boxing Association (amateur) (AIBA).
