Marie Daveluy (born 1936) is a Canadian opera singer and music educator from Quebec.

Early life and education

Marie Marguerite Cécile Alice Louise Daveluy was born to Lucien Daveluy and Renée Dunn in Victoriaville, Quebec. She is the sister of organist Raymond Daveluy. Daveluy's grandfather Adolphe Daveluy founded the town of Daveluyville, Quebec.

Marie Daveluy began her musical studies with Gabriel Cusson, and voice studies with Martial Singher at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal in 1953. Supported by scholarships from the governments of Quebec and Canada, she traveled to Vienna in 1956 for graduate studies with Ferdinand Grossmann and Viktor Graef. [1]

Career

In 1959 Daveluy made her debut with the Salzburg Opera, singing the role of Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos. She went on to sing with the Heidelberg Opera, singing about 30 roles in the years 1961-66. [1]

Marie Daveluy was a professor of voice at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières from 1971 to 1984, and at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal from 1973. She taught the interpretation of Lieder from 1974 to 1981. Her former students include singers Marie-Nicole Lemieux, [2] Karina Gauvin, and Leslie Ann Bradley. [3]

In collaboration with pianist Diane Mauger she recorded songs by composer Jean Chatillon (L'Oiseau-Coeur OC S-01) in 1974 and songs by Rodolphe Mathieu for the LP Musique québécoise 'nos compositeurs' (L'Oiseau-Coeur OC S-02, 1977). [1]

The Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Trois-Rivières (CMQT) is a music conservatory located in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada. Most of the school's students come from the Saint-Maurice region of Quebec; many of them from the conservatoire preparatory programs at the school of St-Gabriel du Cap-de-la-Madeleine and the comprehensive school Ste-Ursule de Trois-Rivières. The CMQT was originally located on Laviolette St, but in 1970 the school moved to better facilities in the building of the Centre culturel and the former École Ste-Marie. The conservatoire moved to its present location on Radisson Street in October 1978.

Gabriel Cusson was a Canadian composer and music educator. As a composer, his music was heavily influenced by the style of early 20th-century French composers. Most of his work remains unpublished, although a few of his compositions have been recorded including his Sérénade for orchestra and one of his suites by the Orchestre Métropolitain. The Canadian publishing company La Bonne Chanson has printed a number of his folksong arrangements. His other unpublished works include several motets, the cantata À la gloire de Jeanne Mance (1942), and incidental music for Antigone and the biblical dramas Jonathas and Tobie.

Joseph Eugène Raymond-Marie Daveluy was a Canadian composer, organist, music educator, and arts administrator. An associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre, his compositional output consisted mainly of works for solo organ. He had an active international career as a recitalist and concert performer from 1946 through the 1990s. He held a number of church posts in Montreal, including serving as organist of St-Jean-Baptiste Church (1946–1951), Immaculée-Conception Church (1951–1954), and St-Sixte Church (1954–1959). In 1980, he was named a Member of the Order of Canada. He was married to pianist Hilda Metcalfe.

Édouard Joseph Woolley was a Canadian tenor, actor, composer, and music educator of Haitian birth. He became a naturalized Canadian citizen in 1958. His compositional output includes masses for three voices and for four voices, a few songs, and some instrumental pieces. The section "Mazoumbel" from his suite for violin and piano Sous les palmiers was performed in a concert of Haitian music in Montreal in 1979.

Anna-Marie Globenski was a Canadian pianist and teacher who taught at the École de musique Vincent-d'Indy from 1960 to 1963 and Université Laval for 30 years. She was an accompanist for the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal, appeared on CBC Radio and CBC Television and recorded three pages of music from various composers. Globenski was a member of various juries and various music competitions in Canada and Europe. She established the Fonds Fondation Anna-Marie-Globenski in 2001. In early 2005, Laval's preparatory music school was named after Globenski to celebrate 30 years of her at the institution.
