Marieta Rigamoto (born 1941or1942) is a former Fijian civil servant,politician and Cabinet Minister.
Rigamoto was educated at Dudley High School, [1] and subsequently graduated with a Diploma in Tropical Agriculture from the Fiji College of Agriculture in 1965,and with a Bachelor's degree in Science (BSc) from the University of Hawaiʻi in 1969. She later completed postgraduate work at the University of London in 1971.
She worked in the civil service from 1966 to 1998. Her assignments included the Ministry of Agriculture (1969–1982),and the Public Service Commission (1975–1976). She was Principal of the Fiji College of Agriculture from 1982 to 1989. Her last civil service appointment was in the Office of the President,from 1994. She retired from the civil service on 1 December 1998.
She contested the 1999 Fijian general election as an independent,and was elected to the House of Representatives of Fiji after winning a tight competition for the Rotuman Communal Constituency. She was subsequently appointed Assistant Minister for Agriculture. [2] During the 2000 Fijian coup d'état she was taken hostage by George Speight. After turning down an offer of freedom, [3] she was eventually released on 24 June after 37 days in captivity. [4] [5] She was re-elected in the 2001 election [6] and appointed Assistant Minister in the Prime Minister's Department. Following the death of Ahmed Ali she was appointed Minister for Information and Media Relations in July 2005. [7] In September 2005 she was forced to apologise for contempt of court,after commenting on evidence during the trial of an agriculture ministry official over a multi-million dollar corruption scam. [8]
In February 2006 she announced that she would not be contesting the 2006 election. Following her retirement she was named as one of a number of Ministers who has used farming assistance funding to buy votes during the 2001 election. [9] [10] Further allegations of her involvement were made at another trial in 2011. [11] The investigation was ultimately discontinued in 2011. [12]
Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka is a Fijian politician,former soldier and former sportsman who has served as Prime Minister of Fiji since 24 December 2022. He was the instigator of two military coups in 1987. He was democratically elected as Prime Minister of Fiji,serving from 1992 to 1999,and again in 2022,leading a three-party coalition. He also served as Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs from 1999 to 2001,and later as Chairman of the Cakaudrove Provincial Council from 2001 to 2008.
Tupeni Lebaivalu Baba is a Fijian academic,politician,and former Cabinet Minister. A founding member of the Fiji Labour Party,he served as a Cabinet Minister in the government of Timoci Bavadra until removed from office by the 1987 Fijian coups d'état,and then one of the two Deputy Prime Ministers in the government of Mahendra Chaudhry until removed from office by the 2000 Fijian coup d'état. After splitting with Choudhry in the wake of the coup,he founded the New Labour Unity Party to contest the 2001 election,but failed to win a seat in Parliament. He unsuccessfully attempting to re-enter politics at the 2006 election under the banner of the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua,and again at the 2014 election as part of the Social Democratic Liberal Party.
The Fiji coup d'état of 2000 was a civilian coup d'état by hardline i-Taukei nationalists against the elected government of an Indo-Fijian Prime Minister,Mahendra Chaudhry on 19 May 2000. This was followed by an attempt on 27 May by President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to assert executive authority,and then by a military coup on 29 May by Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama. The coups resulted in the removal of the elected government and its replacement by an interim regime headed by Josefa Iloilo. In March 2001 the Court of Appeal of Fiji ruled that the coups and interim regime were illegal. An elected government was finally restored by the 2001 Fijian general election.
Ro Teimumu Vuikaba Kepa is a Fijian chief,former Member of the Parliament of Fiji,and former leader of the Social Democratic Liberal Party. She was the first Fijian woman to serve as Leader of the Opposition. She previously held the position of Deputy Prime Minister in the Qarase-led Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) government from 2001 to 2006. As the paramount chief of the Burebasaga Confederacy,she holds the title Roko Tui Dreketi.
Josefa Bole Vosanibola is a former Fijian politician and Cabinet Minister. He is the father of former Social Democratic Liberal Party MP Peceli Vosanibola.
Poseci Waqalevu Bune was a Fijian civil servant,diplomat,politician and Cabinet Minister. He served as chair of the Public Service Commissioner,secretary to the Prime Minister,and as Fiji's permanent representative to the United Nations,as well as a Cabinet Minister in the governments of Mahendra Chaudhry and Laisenia Qarase,and in the military regime of Frank Bainimarama. Bune died of prostate cancer on 22 November 2023,at the age of 77.
Ratu Meli Bogileka is a Fijian politician. He was the Secretary of the People's National Party (PNP) up to its decision to merge into the Party of National Unity (PANU) on 5 March 2006. This merger,an affair complicated by several about-turns,saw Bogileka appointed Secretary of the new PANU..
Adi Ateca Moceiwaqa Mara Ganilau was a Fijian public figure and the eldest daughter of the former Prime Minister and President,the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. Later in life she made many statements to the press about her family and the government.
Kaliopate Tavola is a Fijian Agricultural economist,diplomat,and politician,who was his country's Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2000 to 2006. He was also Minister for External Trade and Minister for Sugar.
Ofakilomaloma Swann,also known as Ofa Duncan,is a Fijian lawyer,academic,and former politician. She served in the House of Representatives of Fiji from 1999 to 2006,and was leader of the New Labour Unity Party.
Simione Kaitani is a former Fijian politician and Cabinet Minister in the government of Laisenia Qarase. He was tried for taking an illegal oath over the 2000 Fijian coup d'état in 2005,but acquitted. He later served as Leader of the House,until removed from office by the 2006 Fijian coup d'état.
Adi Asenaca Coboiverata Caucau,generally known simply as Adi Asenaca Caucau,is a Fijian politician. She served as Minister For Women and Minister for Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation from 2001 to 2006,when she became Minister of State for Housing. She held this post,and continued to represent the Tailevu South Lomaiviti Open Constituency in the House of Representatives until 5 December 2006,when the Military of Fiji staged a coup d'état and removed her government from office. She had first won the seat for the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua Party (SDL) in the parliamentary election of September 2001.
Samisoni Tikoinasau Speight,also known as Sam Speight Jr is a Fijian politician,who held Cabinet office as Minister of State for Public Utilities and Reforms,to which he was appointed after the 2006 election. Previously,he was Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources from 2005 to 2006. Like many ethnic Fijians,he rarely uses his surname.

She is currently president of the Soqosoqo Vakamarama I Taukei,Fiji's largest indigenous women's organisation.

He was the son of Ratu Tevita Vakalalabure,who served in both houses of Parliament from the 1970s to the 1990s.
Premila Kumar is a Fijian consumer advocate,politician and former Cabinet Minister. She served as chief executive of the Consumer Council of Fiji from 2006 to 2018,and then as a Cabinet Minister in the government of Frank Bainimarama from 2018 to 2022. She is a member of the FijiFirst party.
