Marilyn Stebner Kite (born October 2,1947) [1] is a former justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court,serving on the high court from 2000 to 2015. She was elected chief justice by her fellow justices in 2010 and served one term.
She is a native of Laramie,Wyoming [2] and attended law school there at the University of Wyoming. [3] Kite was the first woman named to the position of chief justice in Wyoming. [2]
Sandra Day O'Connor was an American attorney,politician,and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1981 to 2006. O'Connor was the first woman to serve as a U.S. Supreme Court justice. A moderate conservative,O'Connor was known for her precisely researched opinions. Nominated by President Ronald Reagan,she was considered a swing vote for the Rehnquist Court and the first four months of the Roberts Court. Before O'Connor's tenure on the Court,she was an Arizona state judge and earlier an elected legislator in Arizona,serving as the first female majority leader of a state senate as the Republican leader in the Arizona Senate. Shirley Schlanger Abrahamson was the 25th chief justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Jean Hoefer Toal is a former chief justice of the Supreme Court of South Carolina. She was the first woman and the first Roman Catholic to serve as chief justice. The Wyoming Supreme Court is the highest court in the U.S. state of Wyoming. The Court consists of a Chief Justice and four Associate Justices. Each Justice is appointed by the Governor of Wyoming from a list of three nominees submitted by the judicial nominating commission,for an eight-year term. One year after being appointed,a new justice stands for retention in office on a statewide ballot at the next general election. If a majority votes for retention,the justice serves the remainder of the term and may stand for retention for succeeding eight-year terms by means of a nonpartisan retention ballot every eight years. A justice must be a lawyer with at least nine years' experience in the law,at least 30 years old,and a United States citizen who has resided in Wyoming for at least three years. Justices must retire when they reach 70 years of age.

Same-sex marriage has been legally recognized in Wyoming since October 21,2014. The U.S. state of Wyoming had previously prohibited state recognition of same-sex marriages by statute since 1977 and had enacted a more explicit ban in 2003. An attempt to enact legislation recognizing domestic partnerships as an alternative to marriage for same-sex couples failed in 2013. On October 17,2014,a federal district court found the state's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. Its ruling took effect on October 21 when state officials notified the court that they would not appeal the decision.

The Wyoming House For Historic Women,also known as Wyoming Women's History House is a museum in downtown Laramie,Wyoming,United States,which celebrates the achievements of 13 women from the state of Wyoming. It was established by the Louisa Swain Foundation,which honors Louisa Swain,the first woman in the United States to vote in a general election. She cast her ballot on September 6,1870,in Laramie,Wyoming. The museum opened in 2012. The Wyoming State Historical Society says Swain was "the first woman in the world to cast a ballot under laws giving women and men equal voting rights".
