Following the 2016–17 campaign and after three seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League with Vityaz, Kempe left as a free agent and returned to North America in securing a one-year, two-way contract with the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL) on 16 May 2017.
