Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the eye. An ophthalmologist is a physician who specializes in ophthalmology. The credentials include a degree in medicine,followed by additional four to five years of residency training in ophthalmology. Residency training programs for ophthalmology may require a one-year internship with training in internal medicine,pediatrics,or general surgery. Additional specialty training may be sought in a particular aspect of eye pathology. Ophthalmologists are allowed to prescribe medications to treat eye diseases,implement laser therapy,and perform surgery when needed. Ophthalmologists may participate in academic research on the diagnosis and treatment for eye disorders.
Luis J. Haddock is a former professional tennis player from Puerto Rico. He attended Colegio Católico Notre Dame high school. He lived in his hometown of Caguas and played for the University of Notre Dame. Luis also participated on the Davis Cup team representing Puerto Rico. After graduating from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine,Luis was an ophthalmology resident at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute,where he trained with Avnish A. Deobhakta,D. Wilkin Parke III and Roger A. Goldberg. In the summer of 2012,he began a vitreoretinal fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School in Boston,MA under his senior fellows David Kim,,Anthony Daniels and Dimitra Skondra.
Robert G. Devenyi FRCSC,FACS is a vitreoretinal surgeon and Professor of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto. He is also the team ophthalmologist for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League. Devenyi is Ophthalmologist-in-Chief and Director of Retinal Services at the University Health Network (UHN),which is affiliated with the University of Toronto. Devenyi is also the co-director of the Donald K. Johnson Eye Institute located at the Toronto Western Hospital,part of UHN. The DKJ Eye Institute is Canada's premier subspeciality ophthalmology facility.

David Paton is a retired ophthalmologist best known as founder in 1970 of Project Orbis and thereafter as its first Medical Director helping to develop (1970–1982) and then deploy its teaching aircraft for ophthalmologists worldwide,especially in the developing nations. Paton resigned from Orbis in 1987 and focused on other aspects of academic ophthalmology,but in 2011 he returned in a voluntary capacity to assist in fund raising for a new annual appointment,the David Paton Orbis Fellowship in Global Ophthalmology.

He currently serves as the vice chairman for translational research and director of ocular oncology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the associate director for basic research at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. His clinical practice focuses on intraocular tumors,including uveal (ocular) melanoma,retinoblastoma,lymphoma and other neoplasms. His field of research includes the genetics and genomics of cancer,with a focus on prognostic biomarkers,mechanisms of metastasis,and molecular targeted therapies. He has given over 300 invited scientific lectures,and published over 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters. Dr. Harbour founded the Ocular Oncology Service at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis,where he was the Paul A. Cibis Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology &Visual Sciences.

Robert E. MacLaren FMedSci FRCOphth FRCS FACS VR is a British ophthalmologist who has led pioneering work in the treatment of blindness caused by diseases of the retina. He is Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford and Honorary Professor of Ophthalmology at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. He is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Oxford Eye Hospital and an Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Great Ormond Street Hospital. He is also an Honorary Consultant Vitreo-retinal Surgeon at the Moorfields Eye Hospital. MacLaren is an NIHR Senior Investigator,or lead researcher,for the speciality of Ophthalmology. In addition,he is a member of the research committee of Euretina:the European Society of Retina specialists,Fellow of Merton College,in Oxford and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

He was awarded the Padma Shri award in January 2007 for his services to the medical field. Elizabeth P. Rakoczy is a Hungarian-born molecular ophthalmologist. She is a professor at the University of Western Australia. She started the molecular ophthalmology department at the Lions Eye Institute. In 2017,Rakoczy was awarded the Florey Medal for her human gene therapy trial to modify viruses for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration.
