The United States Department of the Army (DA) is one of the three military departments within the Department of Defense of the U.S. The Department of the Army is the federal government agency within which the United States Army (U.S.) is organized, and it is led by the secretary of the Army, who has statutory authority under 10 United States Code § 7013 to conduct its affairs and to prescribe regulations for its government, subject to the limits of the law, and the directions of the secretary of defense and the president.
Lieutenant General Joseph Richard Inge was an officer of the United States Army. He served as Deputy Commander, United States Northern Command, and Vice Commander, United States Element, North American Aerospace Defense Command, headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado in 2007. He retired in 2007, after a 38-year career.
Joseph Francis Dunford Jr. is a retired United States Marine Corps four-star general who served as the nineteenth chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2019. He was the thirty-sixth commandant of the Marine Corps. Dunford is the first Marine Corps officer to serve in four different four-star positions; the others include commander of the International Security Assistance Force and United States Forces – Afghanistan from February 2013 to August 2014, and as the thirty-second assistant commandant of the Marine Corps from October 23, 2010 to December 15, 2012. He has commanded several units, including the 5th Marine Regiment during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
First Army Division East is a division of the First United States Army. With its new role, the First Army developed two subordinate multi-component headquarters – one division to support the eastern United States and the other to support the western United States. First Army Division West was activated at Fort Carson, Colorado, and later moved to Fort Hood, Texas. First Army Division East was activated on 7 March 2007 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, and later moved to Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Richard C. Longo is a retired major general of the United States Army. At the time of his retirement on 22 July 2014, he was deputy commanding general and chief of staff for U.S. Army Europe. He previously served as the deputy commanding general for Initial Military Training for the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) at Fort Monroe, Virginia.
Robert Bruce Abrams is a retired four-star general in the United States Army who last served as the commander of United States Forces Korea. He concurrently served as the commander of United Nations Command and commander of R.O.K.-U.S. Combined Forces Command. He previously served as the 22nd commanding general of United States Army Forces Command from August 10, 2015 to October 17, 2018. He was a 1982 graduate of the United States Military Academy where he was commissioned as an armor officer. During his years of active service, he has held command and staff positions across the Army and joint community in Germany, the United States, Southwest Asia and South Korea. Abrams comes from a family of career military officers. His father was former Army Chief of Staff General Creighton W. Abrams Jr., and both of his elder brothers, Creighton and John, were Army general officers.
Gustave F. Perna is a retired United States Army four-star general who last served as the chief operating officer of the federal COVID-19 response for vaccine and therapeutics. He previously served as the chief operating officer of Operation Warp Speed from July 2020 until the operation's duties and responsibilities were transferred to the White House COVID-19 Response Team in February 2021. As chief operating officer of COVID-19 response, he oversaw the logistics in the United States federal government's distribution of the vaccine to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Senate confirmed his nomination as chief operating officer on July 2, 2020, and he assumed the office shortly after.
Diana Maureen Holland is a retired major general in the United States Army, who last served as commanding general of the Mississippi Valley Division of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. She is a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. From January 2016 to June 2017, served as Commandant of Cadets at the United States Military Academy, the first woman to hold the position.
Daniel Robert Hokanson is a four-star general in the United States Army who currently serves as the 29th chief of the National Guard Bureau. He previously served as the 21st director of the Army National Guard. His previous military assignments include serving as vice chief of the National Guard Bureau, deputy commander of United States Northern Command, adjutant general of the Oregon National Guard, and commander of the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team. He is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Just Cause. Hokanson assumed his current assignment on 3 August 2020.
Laura Jane Richardson is a four-star general in the United States Army who is the commander of United States Southern Command since 29 October 2021. Prior to that, she was the commanding general of United States Army North from July 2019 to September 2021.
Matthew J. Van Wagenen is a United States Army major general who currently serves as deputy chief of staff for operations (DCOS-OPS) of Allied Command Operations in the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe. He was previously the deputy commanding general of V Corps at Victory Forward in Poznan, Poland and another prior assignment was as the chief of staff of operations of NATO, Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. He served as deputy commanding general of the 3rd Division and the 1st Cavalry Division, and as the commander of Task Force Southeast in Gardez City, Paktia Province, Afghanistan, from March to August 2017. He has participated in numerous combat operations, such as the Battle of Ramadi in 2006.
Paul T. Calvert is a United States Army lieutenant general who serves as the deputy commanding general and chief of staff of the United States Army Forces Command since December 2021. He most recently served as the Commander of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve from September 2020 to September 2021. Previously, he was the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans, and Training of the United States Army.
Randy Alan George is a United States Army general who has served as the 41st chief of staff of the United States Army since 21 September 2023, having served in an acting capacity from 4 August 2023. He most recently served as the 38th vice chief of staff of the United States Army from August 2022 to September 2023, and previously served as the senior military assistant to the United States Secretary of Defense.
James B. Jarrard is a United States Army lieutenant general who serves as the deputy commanding general of United States Army Pacific since July 28, 2022. He most recently served as the chief of staff of the United States Indo-Pacific Command, succeeding Ronald P. Clark. He served as the Commanding General of the 25th Infantry Division from November 5, 2019, to July 23, 2021. Previously, he served as the Director of Operations of the United States Special Operations Command.
Stephen J. Maranian is a retired major general who served in the United States Army from 1988 to 2023. Commissioned as a Field Artillery officer, Maranian served continuously on active duty, commanding from the platoon to the two-star level. In his final assignment he served as commanding general of the 56th Artillery Command in Mainz-Kastel, Germany from 2021-2023. Maranian served in combat deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq and more than half of his career was spent overseas. Maranian holds two master's degrees and is a graduate of both the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the United States Army War College; he has also graduated from the NATO Defense College and the Defense Language Institute.
John W. Brennan Jr. is a United States Army major general who currently serves as the Special Assistant to the Commanding General, United States Army Special Operations Command. He most recently served as director of operations of the United States Special Operations Command from October 2022 to July 2023, commander of the Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve since September 9, 2021 to September 8, 2022. He previously served as the Commanding General of the 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne) from November 2019 to August 2021, and as the Deputy Commander of Joint Special Operations Command.
Charles Russell "Charlie" Miller is a United States Army major general who has served as Director, Strategy, Plans and Policy of the Army Staff since July 2022. He most recently served as the Director for Plans, Policy, Strategy, and Capabilities of the United States European Command from July 2020 to June 2022, and prior to that, he served as the Deputy Director of Joint Strategic Planning, Strategy, Plans, and Policy of the Joint Staff from July 2019 to July 2020.
Mark W. Gillette is United States Army major general who served as the Senior Defense Official and Defense Attaché to U.S. Embassy Cairo, Egypt from September 2020 to January 2023. Previously he served as the Chief of Staff of the United Nations Command from August 2018 to September 2020 and Defense Attaché to U.S. Embassy Beijing, China from June 2013 to June 2015.
Matthew W. McFarlane is a United States Army major general who has served as deputy commanding general of I Corps since September 2023. He most recently served as commander of Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve from September 8, 2022 to August 22, 2023. He also served as the deputy commanding general of United States Army Pacific from August 2021 to July 2022, and as the commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division from 2019 to 2021. Previously, he was the Senior Military Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense.
