Marka is an area of Greater Amman Municipality, Jordan. It is to the north-east of Amman proper and its confines include Amman Civil Airport and the Marka refugee camp. 31°58′N36°00′E / 31.97°N 36.0°E Population as of 2020 was 167,648. [1]
Jordan is situated geographically in West Asia, south of Syria, west of Iraq, northwest of Saudi Arabia, east of Palestine. The area is also referred to as the Middle or Near East. The territory of Jordan now covers about 91,880 square kilometres (35,480 sq mi).
Jordan has a population of more than 11.1 million inhabitants as of 2023. Jordanians are the citizens of Jordan. Around 94% of Jordanians are Arabs, while the remaining 6% belong to other ethnic minorities, including Circassians, Chechens, Armenians and Kurds. Around 2.9 million inhabitants are non-citizens, a figure including refugees, legal and illegal immigrants. Jordan's annual population growth rate stands at 3.05% as of 2023, with an average of 2.8 births per woman. There were 1,977,534 households in Jordan in 2015, with an average of 4.8 persons per household.
The foreign relations of Jordan have been consistently a pro-Western foreign policy. Jordan had close relations with the United States and the United Kingdom. These relations were damaged when Jordan proclaimed its neutrality during the Gulf War and maintained relations with Iraq. In public, Jordan continued to call for the lifting of UN sanctions against Iraq within the context of implementing UNIC resolutions.
Amman is the capital and the largest city of Jordan, and the country's economic, political, and cultural center. With a population of 4,061,150 as of 2021, Amman is Jordan's primate city and is the largest city in the Levant region, the fifth-largest city in the Arab world, and the tenth-largest metropolitan area in the Middle East.
The flag of Jordan, officially adopted on 16 April 1928, is based on the 1916 flag of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. The flag consists of horizontal black, white, and green bands that are connected by a red chevron. The colours are the Pan-Arab Colors, respectively representing the Abbasid, Umayyad, and Fatimid or Rashidun caliphates. The red chevron is for the Hashemite dynasty, and the Arab Revolt.
Zarqa Governorate is the third largest governorate in Jordan by population. The capital of Zarqa governorate is Zarqa City, which is the largest city in the governorate. It is located 25 kilometres (16 mi) east of the Jordanian capital Amman. The second largest city in the governorate is Russeifa.
Amman Governorate, officially known as Muhafazat al-Asima, is one of the governorates in Jordan. The governorate's capital is the city of Amman, which is also the country's capital. The administrative center of the governorate as well as all government offices and parliament are located in the Abdali district.
Sunni Islam is the dominant religion in Jordan. Muslims make up about 97.2% of the country's population. A few of them are Shiites. Many Shia in Jordan are refugees from Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq.
Amman Civil Airport, commonly known as Marka International Airport, is an unscheduled airport located in Marka district, Greater Amman Municipality, Jordan, some 5 km north-east of Amman city centre.
The Marka refugee camp is one of six emergency camps erected in 1968 to shelter 15,000 Palestinian refugees fleeing the West Bank and the Gaza Strip due to the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. Located in the Marka district of metropolitan Amman, about ten kilometers northeast of the city center, it is known locally as Hittin (حطين) or Schneller and houses 44,879 UNRWA registered refugees and over 17,500 displaced persons.
Wadi Al-Seer or Wadi as-Seer is an area in the Greater Amman Municipality named after a prehistoric queen that ruled the area, Queen Seer. It consists of ten neighborhoods, some of which are residential, other commercial, or both.
Marj Al-Hamam is the district number 27 of Metropolitan Amman – Greater Amman Municipality (GAM); it is situated to the western part of GAM. It comprises 16 neighborhoods and population gatherings ; it is 53 Km2 of space; its population counts for 82788 capita. Its zoning borders include Naour, Mqabalein, and Wadi EsSeer. Since 2007, it has been part of the Greater Amman Municipality.
The International Community School (ICS) is an international co-educational school in Amman, Jordan. Over 700 students between the ages of three and 18 from more than 50 countries currently attend. (ICS) is independent, private and non-profit, following the English National Curriculum (ENC). The school is accredited by the Council of British International Schools (COBIS). (ICS) is also a member of CIS and ECIS. The current principal is Alun Yorath.
