The Isle of Man, also known as Mann, is a self-governing British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland. As head of state, Charles III holds the title Lord of Mann and is represented by a Lieutenant Governor. The government of the United Kingdom is responsible for the isle's military defence and represents it abroad.
Tynwald, or more formally, the High Court of Tynwald or Tynwald Court, is the legislature of the Isle of Man. It consists of two chambers, known as the branches of Tynwald: the directly elected House of Keys and the indirectly chosen Legislative Council. When the two chambers sit together, they become "Tynwald Court".

The Manx are a minority ethnic group originating on the Isle of Man, in the Irish Sea in Northern Europe. They belong to the diaspora of the Gaelic ethnolinguistic group, which now populate the parts of the British Isles and Ireland which once were the Kingdom of the Isles and Dál Riata. A recent genetical analysis of traditional Manx surnames, identified that the majority of the native manx population belong to the Haplogroup R-DF13 group. The native culture of the Isle of Man is described as Celtic with significant Gaelic, Norse, Norse-Gaelic, and minor northern English influences. The Manx are governed by themselves through Tynwald, the legislature of the island, which was introduced by Viking settlers over a thousand years ago. The native mythology and folklores of the Manx belong to the overall Celtic Mythology group, with Manannán mac Lir, the Mooinjer veggey, Buggane, Lhiannan-Shee, Ben-Varrey and the Moddey Dhoo being prominent mythological figures on the island. Their language, Manx Gaelic is derived from Middle Irish, which was introduced by settlers that colonised the island from Gaelic Ireland. However, Manx gaelic later developed in isolation and belongs as a separate Goidelic language of the Insular Celtic languages.
The Council of Ministers is the principal executive organ of the Isle of Man Government. Its role is similar to, though not identical with, that of the Cabinet in the United Kingdom. Until 1990, its title was the Executive Council.
The Isle of Man Government is the government of the Isle of Man. The formal head of the Isle of Man Government is the Lieutenant Governor, the personal representative of the Lord of Mann. This is currently Charles III. The executive head is the Chief Minister.

Private and consensual acts of male homosexuality on the island were decriminalised in 1992. LGBT rights have been extended and recognised in law since then, such as an equal age of consent (2006), employment protection from discrimination (2006), gender identity recognition (2009), the right to enter into a civil partnership (2011), the right to adopt children (2011) and the right to enter into a civil marriage (2016).

The Manx Sword of State is a ceremonial sword that represents the Tynwald on the Isle of Man. It represents the duties of the Sovereign of the Isle of Man, and is used every month in Tynwald, and annually during the Tynwald Day ceremony. There have been three swords used for such functions over the years. One is used for the ceremonies; one is housed in a museum; the other was lost in the 18th century. The Sword of State is popularly said to date to the mid-13th century; however, it is not unlike 15th-century ceremonial swords used in England, and recent analysis dates it to the 15th century as well.
The Honourable James Crookall Cain FCA was a Manx politician, who was the Speaker of the House of Keys and former Minister of the Isle of Man Government and Member of the House of Keys for the constituency of Douglas West.
Laurence David Skelly MLC is a Manx politician, who has served as President of Tynwald since July 2021.
Alfred Louis Cannan MHK is an independent Member of the House of Keys for Ayre & Michael and is the current Chief Minister of the Isle of Man. He was previously the Minister for the Treasury.
Daphne Hilary Penelope Caine is an English-born Manx politician and former civil servant. She was elected to the House of Keys representing Garff in 2016 and re-elected for the same constituency in 2021. Following the 2021 election, she was elected as Deputy Speaker of the House of Keys. She previously worked on the Isle of Man as a journalist and civil servant.
Kate Lord-Brennan is a Manx politician who has been a member of the House of Keys for the constituency of Glenfaba & Peel since the 2021 Manx general election. Prior to September 2021, Lord-Brennan served as a member of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man, having been elected in March 2018.
Miss Tanya August-Hanson, formerly Tanya Humbles, is a member of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man, having been elected in March 2018.
Kerry Sharpe is a member of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man, having been elected in March 2018 and re-elected in March 2020.

William 'Bill' Shimmins is a Scottish-born Manx politician. He represented the constituency of Middle in the House of Keys until 2021, having been first elected in 2016.
