Marlina Flassy (born 1968) is an Indonesian anthropologist,who is the first woman to hold a deanship at Cenderawasih University,and is the first woman and indigenous Papuan to be appointed Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences there. In 2015 the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology awarded her its Golden Pin Award.
Flassy was born on 15 March 1968 in Seribau,near Teminabuan,South Sorong Regency,West Irian (currently the province of Southwest Papua). [1] She attended YPK Kotaraja Junior High School and then FX Taruna Dharma Kotaraja Catholic High School. [2] She studied for an undergraduate degree in anthropology at Cenderawasih University in Jayapura,graduating in 1995. [1] In 1996 she began work as a lecturer at the same university teaching anthropology,ethnography,folklore,amongst other subjects. [1] She subsequently studied for her Master's degree at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta,graduating in 2002. [1] She studied for her PhD at the University of Gottingen in Germany,graduating in 2015. [1] She is editor of the journal Jurnal Antropologi Papua. [1]
In 2021 she was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences;she is the first woman and the first indigenous Papuan to hold the role. [2] She is also the first woman to hold any deanship at Cenderawasih University. [3] She had previously held the role of Chair of the Department of Anthropology. [1] In 2019 she was appointed Chair of the Cenderawasih University’s Center for Gender and Child Studies (PGSA). [1] Her research interests include:women in West Papua,the Mooi people,the Napan-Wainame people,the Maybrat community and gender and health equality in West Papua. [1] She collaborated with the Indonesian Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection to produce a research report entitled the ‘Profile of women and children in Papua Province’. [4] One example of the research was to reveal that in 2017 there were 98 reported cases of violence against women and children,a figure that did not reflect women in Papua's lived experience. [5]
In 2015 the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology awarded her its Golden Pin Award,marking her contributions to women's rights and anthropology. [6]
Papua is a province of Indonesia,comprising the northern coast of Western New Guinea together with island groups in Cenderawasih Bay to the west. It roughly follows the borders of Papuan customary region of Tabi Saireri. It is bordered by the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea to the east,the Pacific Ocean to the north,Cenderawasih Bay to the west,and the provinces of Central Papua and Highland Papua to the south. The province also shares maritime boundaries with Palau in the Pacific. Following the splitting off of twenty regencies to create the three new provinces of Central Papua,Highland Papua,and South Papua on 30 June 2022,the residual province is divided into eight regencies and one city (kota),the latter being the provincial capital of Jayapura. The province has a large potential in natural resources,such as gold,nickel,petroleum,etc. Papua,along with five other Papuan provinces,has a higher degree of autonomy level compared to other Indonesian provinces.

There is genetic evidence for two major historical lineages in New Guinea and neighboring islands:a first wave from the Malay Archipelago perhaps 50,000 years ago when New Guinea and Australia were a single landmass called Sahul and,much later,a wave of Austronesian people from the north who introduced Austronesian languages and pigs about 3,500 years ago. Ribka Haluk is an Indonesian bureaucrat and current acting governor of Central Papua. She previously held office as head of Women Emancipation Office of Jayawijaya Regency in 2004 and then become acting regent of Mappi Regency in 2017 and also acting regent of Yalimo Regency in 2021. She was appointed as a special staff under Ministry of Home Affairs before being appointed again as the acting governor of newly formed province of Central Papua. She is the first female Papuan to be appointed as a governor.
Southwest Papua is the 38th province of Indonesia to be created,and was split off from West Papua on 8 December 2022. Despite being named southwest,it is a misnomer and this province is actually located in the northwest edge of Papua. The province comprises the Greater Sorong area which consists of Sorong City,Sorong Regency,South Sorong Regency,Maybrat Regency,Tambrauw Regency,and Raja Ampat Regency. The Bill (RUU) on the Establishment of the Southwest Papua Province was passed into law and therefore it became the 38th province in Indonesia.
