Cenderawasih University (Indonesian : Universitas Cenderawasih) is a university in Jayapura, Papua province, Indonesia. The university is the leading educational institution in the province.

Contents

The university has faculties in economics, law, teacher training and education, medical, engineering, and social and political science. Until 2002 the university had a faculty of agricultural sciences at Manokwari, which was then separated to form the Universitas Negeri Papua. The university is divided into two areas: mainly the "Kampus lama" (old campus) which is in the Jayapura suburb of Abepura and the "Kampus baru" (new campus) which is in the hillside of Waena valley.[ citation needed ]

In 2021 it appointed the first woman, Marlina Flassy, to a deanship in its history. Flassy, an anthropologist, was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, and is also the first indigenous Papuan to hold the position. [3] [4]

Alumni

Among the well-known alumni of the university is John Rumbiak, who founded the human rights organisation the Institute of Human Rights Studies and Advocacy (ELS-HAM) in Jayapura. The governor of Papua Province, Barnabas Suebu, and the Indonesian footballer, Boaz Solossa started his higher education at the university.[ citation needed ]

Marlina Flassy is an Indonesian anthropologist, who is the first woman to hold a deanship at Cenderawasih University, and is the first woman and indigenous Papuan to be appointed Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences there. In 2015 the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology awarded her its Golden Pin Award.

Apolo Safanpo is an Indonesian academic and bureaucrat who is serving as the governor of South Papua in an acting capacity since 11 November 2022. He also held office in the Ministry of Home Affairs as the minister's expert staff for governance since 9 November 2022. Before working in the bureaucracy, Apolo was an academic in the Cenderawasih University, with his highest office being the university's rector from 2017 until 2022.
